Right now John Wick: Chapter 4 THERE blasted its way to the box office and critical glory – it’s truly amazing – it’s time to look ahead to where the action franchise will go.
Thanks to the creative minds behind the quadrilogy, we have some characters strong enough to lead their own series. So let’s take a look at some of my favorites to be John Wick spin-offs. You know they’re coming, especially at Ballerina and The Continental it’s on the way, so there’s no point in resisting, people.
Akira and Caine
This is an obvious one. on Chapter 4, we met Akira, Koji’s son, and concierge at the Osaka Continental. When Caine (Donnie Yen) kills Koji (Hiroyuki Sanada), he tells Akira to find him if he wants revenge. He does that in a post-credits scene, which could set up a spinoff where he tracks down or joins Caine on another adventure. We can also further explore Akira’s backstory and learn more about Caine in the process – his past friendship with John and the many ways he serves the High Table to protect his daughter. Come on, this movie basically writes itself!
the King of the Bowery
The world wept when Laurence Fishburne did not reprise his role as Morpheus The Matrix Resurrection. Fortunately, the actor reunited with Keanu in John Wick: Chapter 2, 3and 4, carving out an interesting feature characteristic of the process. The Bowery King controls much of New York’s underworld and, in the right hands, could be remarkable enough to lead a series of films exploring the power struggles between rival NYC leaders. I’ve always missed more Fishburne, and since we’ve only seen glimpses of King’s work in John Wick, I believe there is more to the man’s story. Plus, we need more of Jason Mantzoukas’ Tick Tock Man.
Cassian
Cassian, played by Common, holds his own against John in both fights throughout Chapter 2 and was last seen sitting on a train with a knife stuck in his aorta. I’m surprised the character didn’t even make a cameo Chapters 3 or 4, seeing how her conflict with John remains unresolved. At the very least, he could have appeared with the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne) and offered to pay John for letting him live. That said, there’s a little more to explore here. Maybe not as a stand-alone feature, but Cassian would make a great addition to future shows in any capacity.
No one else
One of the best features of JOhn Wick: Chapter 4 is “Nobody” by Shamier Anderson, aka “Tracker.” His character goes on an amazing journey in the sequel, hunting, protecting, and finally impressing John after our son saves his dog from certain death. A spinoff following Mister Nobody as he scours the land in search of expensive targets (all to buy his dream home) would make for an exciting series of films. Considering her crush on John, it makes sense that she would occasionally run into Winston (Ian McShane) and endure a battle with other assassins and competitors. But, honestly, I just want to see the guy make up with his nut-chewing friend.
Sofia
Halle Berry left her mark in her short screentime John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. Sofia Al-Azwar’s character helps John on his journey to meet the Old Man and kicks a lot of ass alongside his two dogs before promptly leaving the picture. He is absent Chapter 4, which is a shame considering she and John have proven to be a formidable duo. However, I would love to see him in future films if only to resolve his personal story. Sofia’s daughter is hiding, you see? And only John knows where he is. So, a film designed around Sofia’s quest to find her son while avoiding the treacherous High Table is a film I would pay to see.
