I’ve had a few people express concern about the flooring I’m going to use in our home gym, and that’s largely due to my poor cut-and-paste mockups that I’ve shared in previous posts. I’m talking about cut-and-paste photos like this…
Ummmm…yes. I can totally understand the concern. 😀 That floor looks light, gray, and very busy next to the walls.
But as more and more expressed their concern, I began to worry too. After all, I bought this foam gym floor a long time ago, and it’s been in boxes ever since. I can’t remember what the real personal floor looks like, and I’m starting to wonder if it’s too light, too gray, and too busy.
So last night, after I finished my work for the day (I’m still working on getting all the trim wrapped and ready for paint), I decided to open one of the floor boxes and put some tan pieces -see how it actually looks on the walls.
I was so relieved! It was late at night, so there was no natural light, and the floor “read” as black. Not light, not gray, and not busy. Just black with subtle contrasts. I love how it looks with the bright walls. But I was also anxious to see how it looked in the natural light this morning, so when I got up, I went over there to take a look. And once again, I was relieved. Here’s what the actual, real bedroom floor looks like…
It has subtle color variations, but it’s not busy in my eyes. I think it looks great!
And laying this floor can be a breeze. I covered maybe a quarter of the main room area (ie, not including the upper entryway or the closet area) in about five minutes. It couldn’t be easier! But when the floor is finished, I put in a quarter round to cover the sides and finish the baseboards.
So let’s talk about light! I mostly agree that the Dainolite semi-flush 3-light with black shade is the best choice. This is the cut-and-paste mockup I did with that light.
And that, in fact, is the light I bought. I was so convinced after making those mockups yesterday morning that I hit “publish” on that post, and immediately bought the light.
But here’s the funny twist. remember that original light from Target? The perfect one out of stock?
It was in stock this morning, so I bought it too. 😀 I’ll try both, see which one I like better, and bring one back.
And I also bought a dresser to use in the closet area. I don’t want to go to the trouble of building a dresser, and I also don’t want to spend a lot of money on something for a closet in a home gym. So after searching many places onlineI went with this dresser from WalMart.
The price is decent (just over $200), and one review is bad, but that’s because one piece arrived broken. The reviewer said, “I feel the quality of this is exceptional…” but he rated it low because of the broken piece. So hopefully, mine won’t arrive with a broken piece. I’d probably swap out the handles for something that actually shows 😀, but I like that it goes all the way to the floor so it’s not another piece that needs to be vacuumed under.
So things are coming together in this room! I hope to get all the caulking done today on the trim, and then as much as I can on the trim painting tomorrow. Now that I can see part of the floor is in place, I’m so excited to get this room installed and finished!
