Netflix has reportedly fired Christina Ricci, who played Wednesday Addams in the ’90s movies Addams Family, to feature Morticia on Wednesday’s TV show.
Netflix is reportedly looking at Christina Ricci to play Morticia Addams in their future Addams family TV series Wednesday. Morticia is of course the mother of the Addams Family, first described by Carolyn Jones in original ’60s The Addams Family. Several other actresses have played Morticia over the years in various movies and short TV shows. However, Anjelica Huston is the other lead actress known for playing the love of Gomez’s life. Huston played for Morticia in 1991 The Addams Family and Addams Family Values in 1993, Ricci starred equally as Wednesday Addams.

Most iterations of The Addams Family focuses on the whole family, though Netflix is looking to focus specifically on Wednesday for their upcoming show from director Tim Burton. Word to Burton’s live-action Addams family PROJECTS came in October, but it was only announced a few months ago that Burton would take over Wednesday for Netflix. There hasn’t been any official update from February. However, the series is said to be an upcoming story focusing on Wednesday on his years as a student at Nevermore Academy. No one has been moved in the series yet, but it could be changed soon.
Agreed to The Illuminerdi, Netflix is considering casting Ricci as Morticia Addams. At this point, it’s not known how close Netflix is to throwing Morticia away or how serious Ricci’s remarks are. In addition, actress Jenna Ortega (The Babysitter: Killer Queen) and Bailee Madison (Brethren) is reportedly considered to play Wednesday.
Since recently Addams family The show focused Wednesday on the whole family, most of the discussions focused on who will play the title character. Everyone has a choice who should play on Wednesday. Some of the names mixed in with the famous fan cast include fellow Dafne Keen (Logan) and Johnston Island (The Queen’s Gambit). It’s anyone’s guess right now who’s going to be on Netflix, however IlluminerdiThe report shows that Netflix has favored a Latinx actress.
That Burton is a famous director is famous, a project like Wednesday seems perfect in his macabre style of filmmaking. That being said, whoever takes on the lead role will be compared to Ricci since Wednesday turned out to be like the actress. Ricci is clearly too old to play a teenage Wednesday Addams at this point, but including her as Morticia could be a fun callback to previous movies. It can be fan service, but it also doesn’t distract from the story because it’s as if other members of the Addams Family don’t have much of a role in Wednesday. Ricci has stated that before interest in returning to Addams family franchise, so it’s really not that big to imagine Netflix casting her as Morticia.
