The titular Hyena is the space scallywags that players control as they enter each session. In three groups, players steal “pop culture merch” from wealthy Martian opportunists hoping to fund nostalgia from those longing for a planet they left in the dust. The style of the game is described as more colorful than the typical post-apocalyptic shooter thanks to the “graphic novel art style.” This style puts it in line with other multiplayer games like Violators of the law and Bleeding Edge. And like those titles, Hyenas can’t be a free -to -play game.

Specific characters to be seen in the announce trailer include a Richard Nixon-mask wielding a shotgunner with a deployable turret called The Pro and an astronaut with prey-esque foam gun called Commander Wright. Other characters and abilities fall into familiar tropes, including hiding, breaking, and hacking.
