The first official photos for the upcoming film adaptation of Ottessa Moshfegh’s period drama thriller Eileen revealed, giving us our first look at lead stars Anne Hathaway and Thomasin McKenzie. The film had its world premiere last week at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival.
the Eileen The photos tease the chemistry between Hathaway and McKenzie as they portray the respective roles of Dr. Rebecca St. John and Eileen, who work together in a prison. They will form an unlikely bond that will somehow lead them to be involved in a shocking crime.

Eileen directed by William Oldroyd from a screenplay written by Moshfegh and Luke Goebel. The film stars Thomasin McKenzie (Jojo Rabbit, Last night in Soho), Anne Hathaway (The Devil Wears Prada), Shea Whigham (True Detective), Marin Ireland (The Umbrella Academy), and Owen Teague (The Standing).
“The film follows an extraordinary young woman whose sad life spirals toward endless misery,” reads the synopsis (via Sundance). “In cold 1960s Boston, Eileen (Thomasin McKenzie) shuffles between her father’s dirty, emotional home, and the prison where she works with colleagues who reject her. When an alcoholic woman (Anne Hathaway) joins the prison staff, Eileen is taken in. When the possibility of a saving friendship (or maybe more) takes hold and becomes a rare light in Eileen’s darkness, her new found confidant embroils him in a shocking crime that changes everything.
The film was produced by Goebel, Oldroyd, Moshfegh, Anthony Bregman, Stefanie Azpiazu, and Peter Cron. The executive producers are Farhana Bhula, Ollie Madden, Julia Oh, Gregory Zuk, and Jamin O’Brien.
