Throughout the main story of Mass Effect 2, Shepard will encounter new potential upgrades to weapons, armor, squad, and even Normandy itself. The system upgrade to Mass Effect 2 accessed through the Tech Lab in Normandy, where Mordin Solus spends most of his time. Players can access a terminal there to see all the available upgrades and research them using the unique minerals they collect while scanning and exploring the planets. Some upgrade schemes can be purchased from vendors at hubs such as Omega, Citadel, Tuchanka, and Illium, or can be found on missions. However, in order to upgrade Normandy, Shepard had to get some ideas from their recruited squads.

There are three critical upgrades Shepard must make if they want each squad to survive. travel via Omega 4 Relay. Failure to get any of the upgrades before passing through the Relay will result in the death of a squad before entering Collector Base, usually regardless of their Loyalty to Shepard. These are the three Normandy upgrades that Shepard needs to research and buy first. The name of the upgrade, cost of the mineral, and the squad that proposed it, can be found below:
- Thanix Cannon: Garrus; 15,000 Platinum
- Heavy Ship Armor: Jacob; 15,000 Palladium
- Multicore Shielding: Tali; 15,000 Palladium
Players can usually research the Thanix Cannon and Heavy Ship Armor even before the Horizon mission. If they go to recruit Tali immediately following Horizon, they can get all three upgrades quickly.
Next, Shepard wants to prioritize upgrades that make galactic exploration and research upgrades as easy as possible. With this:
- Advanced Mineral Scanner: Miranda; 15,000 Iridium
- Modular Probe Bay: Thane; 15,000 Iridium
- Enlarged Fuel Cells: Samara / Morinth; 3,000 Element Zero
Advanced Mineral Scanner allows players to quickly scroll to scan a planet for unique minerals. The Modular Probe Bay double the number of probes Normandy can drive, and Extended Fuel Cells increase fuel capacity so players don’t have to stop exploring and go back to a system with Mass Relay to keep fueling.
Other squads will provide upgrade suggestions that will benefit their specific abilities, including the following:
- M-300 Claymore: Murmuring; 15,000 Platinum
- + 20% damage to Mordin Tech: Mordin; 3,000 Element Zero
- + 20% Jack Biotic Damage: Jack; 3,000 Element Zero
- M-98 Widow Widow: Legion; 15,000 Platinum
All of this can usually be found under Prototypes tab in the upgrade interface. These are much smaller priorities and can be researched at the discretion of a player.
The last upgrade in Normandy was an upgrade to Med Bay that gave Shepard access to plastic surgery. It was used to remove any cybernetics scarring followed by Shepard in the Lazarus Project which served as a prelude to Mass Effect 2. These lesions usually disappear in a higher Paragon points and worsen the Renegade’s high score. The use of the Med Bay station will prevent damage from any harm regardless of Shepard’s behavior and actions. Its upgrade can be unlocked via an email from Dr. Chakwas after Mordin’s recruitment and could be saved for later unless players are concerned about deleting Shepard’s reports.
