Billy Idol Gets Star on Hollywood Walk of Fame: Watch the Ceremony

Billy Idol received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Friday (January 6). Fellow punk legend Henry Rollins and famous visual artist Shepard Fairey gave speeches to honor the legendary rocker.

Rollins spoke first, praising Idol for his work as the lead singer of UK punk band Generation X, as well as his multi-platinum solo career. “Billy Idol has rock ‘n’ roll in his veins, and punk rock in his DNA,” said the one-time Black Flag singer. “He’s the real thing, and maybe that’s why we’re here today, because decade after decade he’s kept himself. And it takes a lot of courage and a lot of integrity. “

Fairey spoke next, talking about how she idolized Idol after first seeing the “White Wedding” music video on MTV. “I fell in love,” said the artist. “I want to be Billy Idol. Billy is just the coolest.”

Now it’s Idol’s turn to speak, with the rock legend saying, “We originally made the music back in the mid-’70s during the punk-rock era. There wasn’t much hope or anything. We decided without that, there’s no future, we do what we love. And that’s what I do. I do music because I love it. It’s not for any other reason, really. However, I never think that doing this is going to take a long time. We’re thinking maybe six months, maybe a year, maybe two years. I can never imagine something like this. It’s just amazing.”

Also on hand for the ceremony were Idol’s longtime guitarist Steve Stevens and Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones, as well as members of Idol’s current backing band. Idol’s girlfriend China Chow and family members of the veteran rocker were also present.
