Brendan Fraser Recalls Near-Death Experience in The Mummy

Brendan Fraser did some wild stunts during his filming The Mummy franchise. One particular stunt, however, caused Fraser to have a near-death experience.

During a recent appearance of The Kelly Clarkson ShowFraser talks about a stunt from the original 1999 film The Mummywhere Fraser is hung by a rope and really loses it because of it.

“I’m standing on my toes like this with a rope and you only get so far,” Fraser said. “And [director Stephen Sommers] ran and he said, ‘Hey, it doesn’t look like you choked at all. Can you sell it?’ And I was like ‘Okay, great,’ so I thought ‘One more take, man.’ And the camera came around, and I went up on my toes and the guy holding the rope above me, he pulled it up a little bit, and I was stuck on my toes and I had nowhere to go but down. So he pulled over and I went down, and then the next thing I knew, my elbow was in my ear, the world was sideways and I had gravel in my teeth, and everything was quiet.

Fraser went on to note that the stunt coordinator for the film rushed to get Fraser up and make sure he was okay. When he found out that he was, the coordinator jokingly congratulated him, saying “Congratulations, you’re in the club – the same thing happened to Mel Gibson in Brave heart.

Thanks to Fraser, he became okay from the stunt and will continue to star in many more The Mummy movies. Recently, his performance in 2022’s The Whale He earned a ton of accolades, including a Best Actor nomination at the Academy Awards, as well as a win for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
