AirPods can do a lot – from spatial audio support to seamless device transfer. But how well do they handle simultaneous device connections?
While you can’t listen to two audio streams simultaneously from two different devices, by Apple AirPods offer a good level of connectivity. For example, it’s simple switch between different Apple devices, and it’s possible to connect to many different devices with a pair of AirPods – not just at the same time.
AirPods are Apple’s wireless headphones, and they’re effortless to pair with any Apple device. They can also connect to other smartphones as well thanks to their general Bluetooth support. In 2022, there will be four versions of AirPods available today: AirPods 2nd Gen, AirPods 3rd Gen, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max.
Even AirPods cannot receive audio input from two different devices simultaneously, they do offer seamless device switching with other Apple devices. Until someone links their AirPods to their Apple ID, the AirPods will immediately transfer to any device used by the wearer. If you listen to music on your iPhone, the AirPods will connect to it and play that music. If you immediately jump on your MacBook and start watching a movie, the AirPods will immediately switch to the MacBook and pick up its audio. While not SOMEWHAT just like having AirPods connected to two devices at the same time, it’s an excellent alternative for anyone living in the Apple ecosystem.
Connecting Two Different AirPods To An Apple Device
Although it is not possible for AirPods to connect two devices simultaneously, it is possible to connect two different AirPods to the same iPhone or iPad. The best part? Surprisingly it is so easy to get. To get started, connect your AirPods to your iPhone, swipe down from the top right of the screen, and tap the flashing AirPlay icon to the top-right (it looks like a triangle with circles around it). Tap ‘Share Audio,’ take another pair of AirPods, and hold it close to the iPhone (with the case lid open for AirPods or AirPods Pro), wait for it to appear on the screen, and then tap AirPods once it is visible. . As such, audio from an iPhone simultaneously goes to two pairs of AirPods.
Even if it’s not good that you can’t connect AirPods to multiple devices, there are also limited situations where that’s useful. For example, having two phones simultaneously streaming audio to a pair of AirPods may not be such a pleasant experience. Despite this limitation, AirPods still have the ability to connect and recognize many different devices. Add their reliable Bluetooth connectivity to seamless device switching and audio sharing support, and not connecting two devices at once can easily become an issue.
