Celebrity Spray Tan Artist Isabel Alysa Shares Tips To Shine All Year

E !: What are some of the biggest mistakes people make in preparing their own tan or spray tan?
IA: I think one of the biggest mistakes people make is that they exfoliate TRUE before their appointments or they bathe in lots of soaps. You should be exfoliating and preparing your skin 24 to 48 hours in advance and that also includes shaving. The number one cause of streaks in any spray tan or self-tanning application is the razor residue left over from shaving first. You don’t have to shave TRUE before tanning.

You have to do all your skin preparation the day before because if you don’t, your pores will be very open. Sometimes, when you shower and exfoliate TRUE before your spray tanning or self-tanning appointment, chances are the self-tan or spray tan will not achieve its black color because your pores are too open.

E !: Is that part because bathing changes your pH level?
IA: Yes because it takes a few hours for your pH level to return to its normal range after bathing. Amino acids and your pH soften the skin when you bathe in warm water. Applying tanner or spray tanning TRUE after a rain is really the reduction in darkness that can be achieved compared to if you took a shower last night instead.

E !: What about the first shower after the tan? What are some things to keep in mind so we don’t damage our tans?
IA: It needs hot water and you really need to spend your time, especially if you use a tanner with cosmetic bronzer, which is usually the brown thing you see naked in the shower. You don’t strip the skin, you strip the bronzer when you take a shower. You really want to take your time and wash yourself with your hands (no soap) and make sure there are no watermarks.

A lot of people say “my tan is so streaky” and that’s usually because they don’t take the time to thoroughly wash off the bronzer in the shower. Rinse until the running water is clear and there is no bronzer. That’s why you know you’re completely washed.

Your tan will continue to improve for 24 hours, so we encourage people not to use soap for the first shower.
