CES 2023 highlights, from a barista robot to an AR app for eyebrows

Technology companies showed off their latest products this week at CESformerly known as the Consumer Electronics Show, featuring new developments in video as well as lifestyle enhancements with beverage gadgets and makeup.

Crowds of investors, media and tech workers flock to the cavernous Las Vegas area to see the latest technology from large companies and startups. The show runs through Sunday.

Here are some highlights:


Tired of the same old Zooming calls? Zero Distance thinks it has the answer.

The company’s Wehead device helps people in a meeting feel like a remote attendee is in the room with them.

The device looks like a machine you might find at an eye doctor, but with screens on the front. The person participating from afar looks like they are in 3D and when they look around or nod, the machine moves too.

Wehead works with standard computer or smartphone webcams.

“If there are several people around the table and only one screen, not everyone can see the screen, and the person on the laptop, he can’t see everything,” said Wehead creator Ilia Sedoshkin. “That’s the obvious application.”

“But for people who spend 40 hours a week in their home office, they don’t see much of other people. So the feeling of being a real person in the room, using a small space on your desk, can give you a little loneliness,” said Sedoshkin.

Wehead costs $1,555, with a pro version available for $4,555.


From milk tea to passion fruit, the ADAM robot can make any boba tea drink you want.

ADAM can also act as a bartender or barista, but it’s making boba tea for delighted attendees at CES this week who are using digital touch screens to choose their drinks.

“ADAM is intended as a way to attract visitors and a way to make drinks completely automatically and very efficiently,” said Timothy Tanksley of Richtech Robotics.

The two-armed robot has two grip handles that can be adjusted to make specific drinks. While taking a break from mixing drinks, ADAM can dance to entertain the crowd.

ADAM, which can be rented for events or hired full-time, is one of a variety of robots on display at CES this week that perform a variety of tasks from disinfecting surfaces to making deliveries.


During the pandemic shutdown in 2020, California Resident Luiz Rapacci struggles to find his favorite almond milk in grocery stores. She looked online for recipes to make her own, but it was messy and time-consuming.

Almost three years ago, Rapacci arrived at CES to unveil his nut milk brewing machine, the GrowUp brewer.

With GrowUp, customers can make nut milk at home in minutes with water and their choice of variety, from cashews and walnuts to almonds and pistachios, Rapacci said.

The machine costs $599 and is now available for pre-order.


L’Oreal’s Brow Magic brings augmented reality to your brows.

The company’s app scans your face and uses AR to make personalized recommendations for choosing shape, thickness and effect before you apply primer. Then the Brow Magic device provides 2,400 tiny nozzles to brush and paint your brows.

L’Oreal developed Brow Magic with Prinker, creating a device that makes temporary tattoos easy to apply.

Brow Magic makeup, which is expected to launch later this year, can last up to two days and is removed with regular makeup remover.
