‘ChatGPT for music’: Google AI’s MusicLM creates music from chirps

The rapid rise of ChatGPT has many wondering what else artificial intelligence can change. Music production will also change, if a Google The AI research paper released this week is anything to go by.

The paper describes a tool called MusicLM that “can modify whistle and hummed melodies according to the style described in a text caption.” It can also create “high-fidelity music from text descriptions such as ‘a soothing violin melody backed by a distorted guitar riff.'”

on paper website, the examples show the results generated by the tool. At one point, someone hums “Bella Ciao,” an Italian folk song from the late 19th century. Then, based on that humming, the device creates music with instruments, with different styles on offer, including guitar solo, string quartet, and jazz with saxophone.

the Twitter The account @bleedingedgeai posted an example:

“Think of MusicLM as the ChatGPT for music,” tweet entrepreneur Martin Uetz, added, “I can’t wait for it to become mainstream.”

Less desirable would be musicians who have spent decades mastering their instruments, such as illustrators and graphic artists in the past. angry with AI tools which creates impressive images from text prompts.

Among the AI art tools are Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, and DALL-E 2. Someone recently used Midjourney to illustrate a children’s book. Impressed, he shared his experience with the tool on social media—and it was stunned by the backlash from illustrators. And last year, an image created with Midjourney won a prize at an art festival, which also angered the artists.

The problem for artists with such tools is that they arm themselves with a large collection of digital works of art without permission. A lawsuit recently filed in San Francisco by working artists describes Stable Diffusion and Midjourney as “collage tools that violated the rights of millions of artists.”

In fact, copyright concerns have prevented Google AI from releasing MusicLM to the public. But startups may be more willing to release such technology into the wild.

Not that Big Tech isn’t plowing resources into generative AI either

DALL-E is offered by ChatGPT creator OpenAI. Microsoft has invested billions of dollars in OpenAI and will use its technology in various products, including the Bing search engine. Which instead has lit a fire under Google parent Alphabetthat work with the same tools to meet the challenge.

As a tool, MusicLM is far from perfect, but it hints at where things are headed. The same can be said of ChatGPT itself. As a billionaire businessman Mark Cuban recently said to the AI chatbot, “imagine what GPT 10 would look like.”
