Chris Ledesma, who serves as the music editor of The Simpsons for 33 seasons, died at age 64.
Ledesma worked on the animated sitcom since its first series in 1989 until his departure in 2022 due to health issues. All told, Ledesma contributed to 735 episodes of The Simpsons as well as many shorts and other specials. He documents much of his work in a blog called Simpsons Music 500.
In a 2013 video profile from SAE Institute USA, Ledesma explained his role in The Simpsons. Working primarily with longtime composer Alf Clausen, Ledesma says, “We sat down and planned where all the music would go in each scene, and what the music’s motivation would be. The composer dreams the music, and I the technical person who makes sure it fits the picture the way we talked about, the concerns of the producers are addressed… represents the composer who makes sure the music fits right.
The Simpsons paid tribute to Ledesma with a tribute card at the end of Sunday’s episode, as a fan site In the News pointed out.
Several of Ledesma’s former colleagues also paid tribute to him on Twitter. “Chris Ledesma is one of the best, mega-talented people to work with a crew full of great, mega-talented people,” SAYS former Simpsons producer and writer Josh Weinstein.
Jake Schaefer, who replaced Ledesma as the show’s music editor, tweet“Chris Ledesma’s love for music and for The Simpsons an inspiration. I am thankful for the time I had with him this year. He is a great mentor and a genuine person. My heart goes out to his family.”
