Dave Bautista on James Gunn’s DCU Reboot, Why He Won’t Play Bane

With the current transformation of the DC Universe, many fans are hoping to see the actor Dave Bautista get out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and into a new one, especially the iconic Batman villain Bane. However, the actor has ruled out any hope of this happening.

Talked to InsideBautista said he spoke with DC Studios co-head and director James Gunn recently about playing Bane, and revealed that it’s clear Gunn is leaning toward “a complete reboot of the entire universe,” and probably means he can’t play the character.

“I’ve had conversations with James about that but I think the direction he’s leaning, completely rebooting the whole universe, he’s starting from scratch and starting younger and more innovative and in my think you have to do that,” Bautista said.

The actor, who is set to turn 55 later this year, went on to say that he just doesn’t think he can do justice to playing Bane at this point in his career and that he’s not sure he has “high life” needed to plan ahead for many films.

“I think to resurrect the DC Universe, you have to start from scratch, and I think you have to start with young actors,” Bautista said. “You have to start planning for the next 15 years, and I don’t think you can do that to me. And I understand that. And, again, I have to say that I appreciate that because I don’t want to play a character that I can’t do justice to. I don’t think at this point in my career I can do Bane justice. I just don’t know if I can handle the physical part, and I don’t think I have the longevity to plan for films. So, I don’t know if I’m the guy.

Although disappointing to some fans who wanted to see the actor play Bane, Bautista’s comments echoed his feelings about playing Drax. Last yearBautista cited his age as the reason why he would leave the character.
