One of the most interesting aspects of Batman: Destruction Comes to Gotham is how classic Batman characters are interpreted in new and interesting ways. With the movie adaptation now available, let’s take a look at some of the reimagined characters and who they’re based on.
Sanjay “Jay” Tawde/Jason Todd & Dick Grayson
Bruce Wayne’s two wards in the The Destruction Coming to Gotham looks very familiar. Dick Grayson is best known in other continuities as the first Robin, who later became a founding member of the Teen Titans and eventually rebranded himself as Nightwing.
Sanjay Tawde, on the other hand, represents the second Robin — Jason Todd. Killed by the Joker, Todd is later revived and becomes the antihero known as the Red Hood. Todd would become a founding member of the Outlaws.
Kai Li Cain/Cassandra Cain
Kai Li Cain represents Cassandra Cain, who is best known as one of the characters who will hold the role of Batgirl. As the daughter of the assassin Lady Shiva, Cain is a powerful warrior also known as Black Bat and Orphan.
Harvey Dent/Two-Face & Oliver Queen/Green Arrow
You probably already know that Harvey Dent is Two-Face, although his transformation into the iconic Batman villain is different from The Destruction Coming to Gotham. While Poison Ivy turned Mayor Dent into Two-Face here, Dent’s most famous origin was when he was injured by a vial of acid thrown in his face by gangster Sal Maroni, contributing to his dark transformation into a you villain.
Oliver Queen is the Green Arrow – a member of the Justice League and an ally and friend to many of his fellow DC heroes. Like her movie counterpart, Queen excels at archery and is known as a wealthy heroine with a sense of humor.
Barbara Gordon/Oracle
Barbara Gordon has had a long and varied journey throughout DC comics. The daughter of Commissioner James Gordon, Barbara is perhaps the most famous Batgirl. After being shot by the Joker, Barbara assumes a new role as the Oracle – although this Oracle is less mysterious than the The Destruction Coming to Gotham. Barbara returns to being Batgirl occasionally in the comics, depending on the year and story.
Jason Blood/Etrigan
In the comics, Jason Blood is a knight who is linked to the powerful demon Etrigan. Blood often serves as an ally to DC heroes, meaning Etrigan often does as well. The hell demon always speaks in rhyme, which you see quite a bit in the movie.
Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin
The Penguin is one of the most iconic Batman villains, played by everyone from Danny DeVito to Colin Farrell. The Penguin in the comics is more of a violent gangster terrorizing Gotham City than a researcher gone mad and living with Lovecraftian penguins.
Ra’s al Ghul
One of Batman’s most dangerous villains, Ra’s al Ghul is a centuries-old man who leads the League of Assassins. Having discovered the Lazarus Pit — pools of chemicals that can revive the dead and reanimate the dying — Ra’s is hard to get rid of. Although they are enemies, Ra’s respects Batman’s cunning and calls him “Detective” as a sign of that respect.
Talia al-Ghul
Ra’s al Ghul’s daughter, Talia has a different relationship with Batman in the comics. There, Talia and Bruce are sometimes enemies and sometimes lovers, where Talia is the mother of Bruce’s son, Damian. Talia is a highly capable fighter in her own right, sometimes leading the League of Assassins herself.
Pamela Isley/Poison Ivy
Poison Ivy in the comics is not an otherworldly creature created by Ra’s al Ghul and had no involvement in Two-Face’s injury. Instead, he is a botanist who – depending on the iteration – is exposed to many different poisons or empowered by an elemental force called The Green. Either way, he gained additional abilities and powers to control plants, poison others, and control people through pheromones.
Waylon Jones/Killer Croc
Although we don’t know much about Killer Croc in the movie, he is a well-known Batman villain in the comics and other mediums. Born with a rare genetic condition that gives him reptilian features, Waylon Jones is a fast, strong, and fearsome member of Batman’s rogues gallery.
