Richard Kelly’s Donnie Darko is now 20 years old and two of its first potential casting options alongside Jason Schwartzman and David Hasselhoff.
Filmmmaker Richard Kelly’s cult favorite film, Donnie Darko, they are about to star Jason Schwartzman and David Hasselhoff, says film producer Adam Fields. The 2001 sci-fi / horror film was Kelly’s first show and is already out of a high position in between a dedicated number of fans and critics, even if the box office is not well managed.
Donnie Darko Jake Gyllenhaal was featured in a show that helped greatly to raise the profile of the young actor, as well as other famous stars, such as Drew Barrymore, Seth Rogen, Patrick Swayze and Maggie Gyllenhaal. The story follows Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal), a teenager whose walking fights are finally culminated in meeting Frank, a protagonist wearing a rabbit costume who has a fierce future. Frank tells Donnie that the world will end in 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes and 12 seconds. From that point on, Donnie’s life is no longer the same. Due to its dark and somewhat floating plot, Donnie Darko not exactly for everyone, and aside from the film’s failure to attract large audience numbers, Kelly also faced a significant challenge in throwing some of its main roles.

With 20th anniversary of Kang Donnie Darko release now observed, Screen Rant sat down to talk to Fields and discussed some lesser-known details of the film. Surprisingly, Gyllenhaal isn’t Kelly’s first choice to play Donnie, and Patrick Swayze isn’t the first choice to play the inspiring speaker, Jim Cunningham. However, Wes Anderson’s teammate, Jason Schwartzman, is set to play Donnie, while David Hasselhoff is being tried to play at Cunningham. Finally, these castings are not possible and the reasons they are not yet an interesting aspect of Kang Donnie Darko make Read what Fields says below:
… Jason’s uncle was Francis Ford Coppola. He had an agreement at the time to make several films on a small budget for United Artists. And Jason would go, ‘Hey, let’s see my uncle, maybe we can help make it!’ And I was like, ‘I met Francis Ford Coppola? Very good! Let’s do it! ‘… Richard and I went with Jason to see him … He had already read the script and he turned to some scenes in the script, I don’t remember which scene … But he pointed a path and he would go , ‘This is the reason for your movie. Right here, is part of the movie. ‘And then there’s a time where Richard might not quite agree. I’m not sure, it was just a quick moment … Next time I found out, maybe a day or two later, Jason left the movie.
Jim Cunningham’s part was a big part, and we met a lot of people, one of whom was David Hasselhoff who was great because of Baywatch. This is the most bizarre meeting, because he keeps talking about himself in the third person. And he said something like, ‘David Hasselhoff will never do that, but he will do that.’ And I thought, ‘Okay, if I see him, I’ll let him know!’
For whatever reason, Coppola may not be a fan Donnie Darko, but interestingly enough, after the production stop, Schwartzman continued to star CQ. The film, (which will also turn 20 this year), is the directorial debut of Coppola’s son and Schwartzman’s cousin Roman. As in this specific case, Schwartzman decided to stay with the family Kelly’s unusual film. As for Hasselhoff, it’s as if the right choice was later made to throw the late and much -loved Swayze.
One of the Kang Donnie Darko best traits are that its cast isn’t too star -studded to capture the devastation of the film itself. Donnie Darko Coppola may not have had the idea of a good film and just Hasselhoff potential still confused about what Hasselhoff will or will not do, but fans of the dark story can clearly see its strengths, even after many years.
