2 × 6 Bank Dimensions
Finished bench dimensions: 72 ”L x 16 ½” D x 18 ”H
We built our entryway bench from construction grade 2 × 6 pine boards.
For an outdoor seat, use redwood or cedar 2 × 6 lumber instead, like the one we used for it except concrete and wooden benches.
Be sure to inspect all boards to get them as straight and square as possible. See our tips on choosing good wood here.
Step by Step Instruction
Step 1: Prepare and Cut the Bench Leg Pieces
Cut the pieces to leg lengths follow the cut list of PDF plans.
Each seat leg requires one longer piece and two shorter pieces. This allows the top of the bench to overlap for a modern waterfall interior.
Drill pocket holes as shown in the plans, so that you can connect the leg pieces and attach the legs to the bench seat.
Sand all legs pieces using 80-120 grit sandpaper. Rotate the cut edges to match the round factory edges on the other sides of the boards.
Step 2: Assemble the 2 × 6 Bench Legs
Attach each set of three 2 × 6 bench leg pieces to the side using pocket hole screws, to form both side legs.
TIP: Be sure to use a straight edge and clamp to keep the bottom of the legs straight and flush.
Step 3: Prepare and Cut the 2 × 6 Bench Top Pieces
Cut three top banks into 2 × 6 pieces in length as listed in the woodworking plans.
Drill pocket holes in the top pieces of the bench as shown in the plan illustrations, to connect the top of the bench and connect the bench seat to the legs.
Sand all the pieces with 80-120 grit sandpaper, rounding the cut edges to fit the edges of the factory.
Step 4: Assemble the 2 × 6 Bench Seat
Place the 3 – 2 × 6 pieces on the bench seat with the screws in the pocket hole, to form the top of the bench.
Tip: Use and scrap 2 × 6 to ensure correct offset for shorter bench top boards.
Step 5: Place the Bench Legs on the Seat
Place the sides (legs) on top of the bench using the pocket hole screws in the remaining pre-drilled pocket hole.
