The third episode of American Idol auditions started with Sarah Beth, a 25-year-old mother of three from California. Sara started with “You Know I’m No Good” by Amy Winehouse, and the judges asked her to sing another song of her choice. “Show us what your voice can do,” Katy Perry says before Sara sings “Bennie & The Jets” by Elton John.
Luke Bryan acknowledges that Sara is a “good singer,” but Katy feels that Sara’s heart is not in it. “If it’s not your dream, it’s not going to work,” Katy said. Luke and Katy give him a “yes,” meanwhile Lionel Richie says “no.” Sara is still going to Hollywood!
Next is Tanner Charles. The 20-year-old from Oklahoma is a valet. She sang an original song called “Golden Eyes” that she wrote for her boyfriend, who was watching her audition. “It was amazing,” Katy said. Lionel thinks “the sky’s the limit” for Tanner. Luke tells Tanner that he’s “one of the best I’ve personally seen at telling a story.” The judges’ praise led to a ticket to Hollywood for Tanner.
Mike Burson steps in front of the judges with his mom at the piano. He sang “Cold As Ice” by foreigners for his audition. Luke admitted that the show felt like “a big break for me.” Katy believes Mikey is “still in the discovery phase” of his singing journey. Katy thinks she’s not ready, while Lionel and Luke give her a “yes.”
Adin Boyer Shocked With His ‘Perfect Pitch’
Adin Boyer a 22-year-old music teacher from California. He was 2 years old when he was diagnosed with autism. When he was diagnosed, his parents discovered that he had perfect pitch. He has auditory sensory issues and wants to inspire others who are neurodiverse.
He performed his original song “Predicament” for the judges. “That’s unbelievable,” Lionel said. Luke tells Adin that “the only way to make this work is if you can really hear us in the voice choices.” Adin got “yes” from all 3 judges to go to Hollywood.
We are Ani threw the judges off with his high-pitched speaking voice, but it was 100 percent his real voice. The 23-year-old surprised the judges even more with her powerful rendition of “Anyone” by Demi Lovato. “You’re amazing,” Lionel said. “This class is getting ridiculous!” We are going to Hollywood.
Marybeth Byrd from his small town of Armorel, Arkansas, to begin the next chapter of his career. The 21-year-old performed a stunning rendition of The SteelDrivers’ “If It Wasn’t For Love.”
Lionel declared, “You opened your mouth and it was right, period,” Lionel said. Lucas sees a “very bright future” for Marybeth. The young singer takes a moment to tell Katy how much of an inspiration she is to herself. Marybeth quickly earned a golden ticket to Hollywood.
Olivia Soli Declared ‘Best So Far’
Olivia Sol took a risk by performing Lionel’s “Hello” for his audition. The risk paid off because his rendition was truly amazing. Lionel came out of his seat to hug Olivia after her performance. He told her that she was “the best at this audition.” Luke agrees and calls Olivia “gross.” Katy believes that Olivia is ready for the next steps and admits that they will probably push her a lot because she is so good. Olivia is going to Hollywood!
Preston Duffee nothing has been easy in the last two years. Two years ago, his mother took her own life after struggling with bipolar disorder and depression. He performed the original song he wrote after his mom died. The judges gave Preston a standing ovation. “Songwriting is a skill and you’ve got that,” Lionel said. Katy felt she was looking at a “young Luke Bryan.” Preston got a “yes” from all 3 judges. “Keep writing, keep digging, and keep fighting,” Luke said.
Emma Busse is a recent graduate of theater school from Vancouver. The 20-year-old sang “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” by Elton John. The judges had some points for him and wanted him to “unlearn” a few things. They had him sing “Happy Birthday” several times and saw some potential in him. Emma is going to Hollywood.
Keelin He may have the next TikTok jam on his hands. The singer is from Ireland but lives in New York. He performed his original song “Don’t Call Me.” Katy says Keelin reminds her Meghan Trainor. “That song showed me promise,” Katy said. Lionel called the audition “memorable.” While Luke says “no,” Lionel and Katy give him a “yes” that he needs to go to Hollywood.
Elijah McCormick is ‘Top 10 For Sure’
the final audition from Elijah McCormick, who nearly died after a car accident in 2019. He flatlined 9 times as doctors fought to save his life. He was hospitalized for 79 days and had 10 operations. Lionel calls him the “golden boy,” and Elijah admits that the doctors at the hospital also call him the “golden boy.”
His performance of “Bless the Broken Road” brought Lionel to tears. “God sent you back 9 times to do amazing things,” Lionel told Elijah. Elijah’s mom signed him American Idol before her accident, which made Katy believe that it was all “meant to be.” Elijah is going to Hollywood, and Katy says he’s “top 10 for sure.”
