Gorillaz shared a new song, “Skinny Ape,” along with news of augmented reality performances taking place in New York and London next week. The immersive shows will bring giant avatars of the cartoon band to Times Square (2:30 pm Eastern on December 17) and Piccadilly Circus (2 pm GMT on December 18) to perform the new track. Imaginary Gorillaz bassist Murdoc said in a press release, “To all our followers, get ready for the biggest takeover of Times Square since another gorilla destroyed the place. It’s actually bigger than four us.”
“Skinny Ape” appears on Cracker Island is an island, the Gorillaz album to be released on February 24, 2023. Guests include Bad Bunny, Stevie Nicks, and Beck. The AR shows will be directed by Gorillaz cocreator Jamie Hewlett and Fx Gobyand it did Nexus Studios using Google’s AR tech. In other Damon Albarn news, his old band Blur recently announced reunion dates including Spring 2023.
