Gorillaz Share “Skinny Ape,” Announces Augmented Reality Debut

The virtual band Gorillaz has been up to some real-life hijinks, sharing new song “Skinny Ape” from upcoming album Cracker Island is an island and announced a two-city augmented reality live debut.

Don’t be sad for me,” sang virtual Gorillaz vocalist 2-D (Damon Albarn). “I’m a cartoon G / And my intention is to breathe a new world / Don’t be sad for me.”

You may or may not be overwhelmed in person by one of the song’s two “immersive” live debuts. The first set goes down at 2:30 pm ET on December 17th in Times Square, New York, with the second set to follow at 14:00 GMT on December 18th in Piccadilly Circus, London. According to a statement, “These first-of-their-kind immersive experiences will allow fans to gather to witness Gorillaz play in real life – literally larger than life – as Murdoc, 2D, Noodle and Russel are literally standing above them, playing in between two of the world’s most iconic skylines.

The movies were conceptualized by Gorillaz co-creator Jamie Hewlett and French director and illustrator Fx Goby, and will use Google’s augmented reality product ARCore Geospatial API.

Virtual bass player Murdoc Niccals said, “To all our followers, get ready for the biggest takeover of Times Square since some gorillas destroyed the place. Bigger than we have four. Thanks to those tech at Google, we’ve created the music video event of the century, so put on your pink robes and see Gorillaz like you’ve never seen us before. The future is coming!”

Gorillaz released a short teaser trailer for “Skinny Ape,” and it actually features virtual avatars moving like King Kong among skyscrapers. Check that out and stream the song below.

Cracker Island is an island is due on February 24 and pre-orders continues. In the past, the band has shared singles “Cracker Island,” “New Gold,” and “Baby Queen.”
