Harvey Mason jr. named new President and CEO of Academy Recording, according to a press release. Mason is in the position of unpaid, non -temporary standard from 2020, after former head Deborah Dugan was removed. Prior to taking on the interim basis, Mason was chairman of the Board of the Academy. He will leave that position to enter his new role as President and CEO on June 1st.

Dugan is officially removed in March of 2020. He has done so before placed on administrative leave for unspecified misconduct on January 17 of the same year. Following this, he submitted a discrimination complaint to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) in January 2020 where he got fireworks excuses of sexual harassment, racism, and numerous instances of corruption and conflict of interest within the Academy.
With Dugan allegations in his complaint to the EEOC is former Recording Academy head Neil Portnow who raped a woman after her performance at Carnegie Hall, which Portnow called “confused.” Dugan replaced Portnow as CEO of the Recording Academy in August 2019, making her the Academy’s first female president and CEO. She was forced to step down after her 2018 comment that women in the music industry should “Walk. ”
The focus of Mason’s tenure as interim President and CEO is to improve transparency at the Grammy Awards, make changes to voting procedures, and increase diversity within the Recording Academy. Since he took over the role, the Recording Academy has launched a new Songwriters & Composers Wing as well as the Black Music Collective, implemented the final recommendations of the Diversity and Inclusion Task Force, and hired the first Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer. Under Mason’s leadership, MusiCares collected and distributed more than $ 24 million to help struggling artists during the COVID-19 pandemic.
