This week ODESSA surprised fans by dropping the official remix of “The Last Farewell,” the titular track from the duo’s Grammy-nominated album of the sameperformed by none other than the Australian house music virtuoso Hayden James.
James’ passionate rework of the soulful track is a funky re-imagination that sublimely reflects the intention and theme of the ODESZA original. While “The Last Goodbye” was a powerful electronic record sampling Bettye LaVette’s 1965 song “Let Me Down Easy,” James transformed it into a decidedly house track—and a dancefloor filler.
The Australian dance music star uses a faster tempo on his energetic, four-on-the-floor beat, which produces staccato synths and a slow drip of pulsing bass. James cleverly leans on LaVette’s titular refrain, eventually interpolating the entire first verse of “The Last Goodbye” as a transition to a riveting final drop.
