Angela Bassett shared a statement paying tribute Tina Turnerthe legendary singer portrayed by Bassett in his breakout film, What Does Love Have To Do With It?
“How do we say goodbye to a woman who owned her pain and trauma and used it as a way to help change the world?” Bassett stated in a post on Instagram. “Through his courage to tell his story, his commitment to stay on the path of his life, no matter the sacrifice, and his determination to carve out a space in rock and roll for himself and others who like him, Tina Turner showed others. who live in fear of what a wonderful future is full of love, compassion, and freedom.”
Bassett continued, “His last words to me — to me — were ‘You never imitated me. Instead, you reached deep into your soul, found your inner Tina, and showed her to the world.’ I will keep these words close to my heart for the rest of my days. I’m glad to know Tina Turner. I was humbled to help show him to the world. So today, as we mourn the loss of this iconic voice and presence, he has given us more than we asked for. He gave his whole self to us. And Tina Turner is a gift that is always ‘the best.’ Angels, sing to your rest…Queen.”
Turner died now after a long illness. Stars from Mick Jagger and Brian Wilson to Diana Ross, Debbie Harry, and Kid Cudi have since posted tributes of the singer, who, in addition to the pipes that made her the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll, endured domestic abuse and an industry racism to become one of the biggest stars of all time. After Bassett portrayed the actress in his 1993 biopic, she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress and became a leading force in her own industry.
In honor of Turner, RESULTS surrounded him 10 Best Songs.
