Taylor Swift he opened Era Tour at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, last night, giving many songs their live debuts in a massive three-hour set. In front of 70 thousand fans, he ran a giant setlist showing parts of each of his 10 albums while focusing on his new work: Songs from Loving, EVERand About midnight earned live debuts, and the set closed with an extended suite dedicated to the latter. “Is it just me or do we have more things to talk about?” HE flirting the crowd, later adding, “To say a lot has happened is an understatement. In fact, this will be Swift’s first full tour in five years. During that time, he released four new albums—Loving, MOONLIGHT ROMANCE, EVERand About midnight—and revealed the full “Taylor’s Version” of There is no fear and red, more in the upcoming series. (On the eve of the tour opener, Swift released four more songs: three rerecorded loosies, plus one unreleased track.) He opened the show with a Loving suite, kicked off with a medley of “Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince” (in his live debut) and “Cruel Summer” while strutting around in a diamond onesie.
After changing into a country-singer getup and decking out the stage in period-appropriate decor, he joined “Fearless” with an electric-guitar version of the title track, as Billboard notes. the EVER The segment includes the live debuts of “‘Tis the Damn Season,” “Marjorie,” and “Tolerate It,” as well as a self-aware gag from Swift, who said the album is one “I love very – despite what some of you say on TikTok… I’ve seen it. I’ve seen it all!”
Parts of Reputation, Speak Now, red, MOONLIGHT ROMANCE, 1989and he self-titled debut followed, pinballing between intimacy and spectacle: acoustic renditions of “Mirrorball” and “Tim McGraw”; a series of videos transforming Swift into “a Godzilla-esque creature terrorizing a city” (per Billboard) during “Anti-Hero”; swinging neon golf clubs attacking an animated car in “Blank Space”; and elaborate choreography throughout. Approaching the 200th minute conclusion, a About midnight-themed finale featured more than half of the 2022 album, including the live debuts of “Lavender Haze” and the surprise closer, fan favorite “Karma.”
The tour continues tonight with a second show at State Farm Stadium in Arizona, dubbed Swift City for the occasion.
