I have been struggling with the color I chose for my home gym closet space for a while now. This is not a new problem that has arisen in changing the dresser. But I’m also having a hard time deciding what to do with the closet area. As I see it, I have three options, and all three have very different effects on the room.
But before we get to the options, let me show you the wardrobe. As I showed you on Tuesday, I gave the dresser a makeover (you can see the whole thing from start to finish here), and this is what it looks like after the transformation.
Then I found some fun, inexpensive furniture legs on Amazon (they’re only $20, and you can find them here), and decided to try it on the wardrobe. The swap is very easy. Removing the original base with walnut trim and walnut legs is a simple matter of removing six screws, and then the whole thing comes off as one piece. Then I just broke in the new feet, and voila! A new look.
I honestly can’t say which one I like better. I like that the walnut trim and feet show up better against the carpet, but I love the light and airy look of the new feet. Anyway, let me know your thoughts.
But now back to the main topic – the walls of the closet area. Here’s the irony of this whole thing. The colors of the walls in this room are in a certain order. They are in a gradient from the darkest coral color (Watermelon Punch) to the darkest teal (Summer Dragonfly) and then back to coral. (You can see all the colors here.) And I painstakingly measured and visualized so that the pattern of the stripes could be perfectly planned, with the broad stripe behind the Swedish stairs being the darkest teal, and the back wall of the closet the darkest coral. And, I mean, it landed PERFECTwhich you can see in this photo.
I was very proud of the perfection of my plan, but the longer I lived with this huge wall painted in that darkest coral color, the more I resented it in such a large dose. I really like it with narrow stripes. But I can’t get the whole wall painted that color. (As much as I’ve taken steps to add warm colors to our home, my heart still belongs to my beloved teals and greens when it comes to big doses of color.)
So I bring the choices I made for this area. First, very randomly I found some floral wallpaper on Etsy that caught my eye. I was amazed at how the colors of the wallpaper seemed to complement the colors of the stripes perfectly. For days, I kept coming back to see it, so I finally ordered a sample to see it in the room. And yes, the colors are perfect. They are not all exact, but they are very similar.
I know from your comments that some of you struggle with a lot of color and pattern, but I like a lot of color and pattern, so the combination of a floral wallpaper and the striped walls seems to be right up my alley. . I also wanted it to be colorful and patterned, while still being light and bright with a white background. And before you ask, Matt doesn’t care if I cover the walls in floral wallpaper. As long as he can see TV, he will always do what I want as long as I don’t paint the wall hot pink. 😀
I was wondering how my new “Sweat The Crazy Out” neon sign would look against the wallpaper, but yesterday, I saw this picture on my Instagram feed, and I love the look of that! So the wallpaper is definitely running.
The only downside is that it’s the most expensive option, but it’s also a relatively quick option that I can finish in an afternoon when the wallpaper arrives. I’m hesitant to spend that much money on wallpaper only to cover most of it with a dresser, TV, two full-length mirrors, and a neon sign.
The next option is to continue the stripes on the back wall of the closet area. I tried to make a mockup using the exact colors that will be used on the wall. I struggled with the width of the stripes (naturally, they are all the same), but these are the colors that fall on the line of the wall.
That’s a cheap option, but it’s the most time-consuming. I love it, though! It keeps things vibrant, colorful, and interesting.
The last option is obviously the easiest and fastest, and that is to paint the entire area of the wardrobe a solid color. It should be one of the cool colors (teals or greens). I have to admit that while it’s easy and fast and can be done today, it’s the option I’m the least excited about. It looks very dull (which is an issue I have with solid coral walls), and does nothing for me. But the fast and easy aspect of it appealed to me, for sure.
What do you think? Should I go to Etsy and buy wallpaper? Head to Home Depot and buy a few rolls of painters tape? Or just grab the paint roller and do a quick and easy job this afternoon?
