Hours Before Alec Baldwin’s Shooting, Crew Walks to Set Working Conditions in Protest

About six hours passed Alec Baldwin fired the prop gun which killed bet Cinematographer Halyna Hutchin, several members of the camera crew staged a walkout to protest the poor and unsafe working conditions. Two people talking consequences on condition of anonymity said that betThe assistant director – the person responsible for managing the production schedule and the “last line of defense” of safety – has a troublesome history of ignoring safety protocols.

News of the walkout first spread via a viral post on Instagram on the @ia_members account, which is run anonymously by members of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, or IATSE. The post shows a screenshot of a text message from a member of bet the camera crew, saying, “The whole camera crew left this morning,” due to “lack of payment for three weeks, took our hotels even though I asked them for our deal, lack of safety in COVID, [and on] more than that, bad gun safety! ” The text added that the producers “brought in 4 non -union men to replace us and tried to call the police on us.”

the Los Angeles Times confirmed the walkout and collected many details about the lack of gun care in production. A prop gun danger played twice on Saturday, Oct. 16, and another last week. A source said, “there is a serious lack of safety meetings on this set.”

Sources say consequences that it was part of a pattern for assistant director Dave Halls. One man who asked to remain anonymous said he had twice filed formal safety complaints against him. Another man, who asked to be called ‘Jay,’ recounted several times that he said the Halls did not pay attention to safety protocols.

At one point when, “We had a gun on set,” Jay said Halls always tried to skip or speed up safety run-throughs. “I want to have these safety meetings. I can show them [actors] that the room was empty, the magazine empty, so that they could be comfortable on the set. I’m the only person holding it, or maybe an armorer if you want a flashbang effect. AD has to check this every time, they are supposed to be the last line of defense. He always rolled his eyes. ‘Should we hold a safety meeting?’ He’ll do it and he’ll be a slap in the face. ‘Well guys, we have a gun on set, as always.’ ”

Most annoying to Jay, “One day the actress pointed this in her head. He doesn’t want to have a safety meeting! It takes someone from another department to request the meeting to finally hold it. It wouldn’t have been like that. It must be the first and foremost safety. ”

In another sad example, Halls wanted to film a scene with pyrotechnics while the person allowed to show it was suffering from a medical emergency. “We need to create a fire effect, but you need to create a fire safety card that allows you to work with pyrotechnics. that someone has a medical emergency in the parking lot. [Halls] said, ‘Yeah, so awesome, we hope he gets better, can you just light this pyrotechnic?’ I look at the props. No, I’m not trained for that. A man is out in an unknown state with seizures. Finally, the fire safety officer said, ‘No, not really, we’ll wait until we get someone licensed to do it.’ ”

Jay added that Halls responds to outside needs. “He felt a pressure from an unfathomable schedule. Trying to get people to act faster than they should, especially for safety… There was a comedy on set, hurry and wait. But let’s not hurry. We’re not curing cancer here. People shouldn’t die. “

consequences made repeated attempts to reach the Halls, but he still did not respond.

The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s department is still investigating the shooting, and it’s unclear why the prop gun firing turned out to be fatal. According to the search warrant obtained by KOAT 7, Baldwin handed the gun to the unnamed assistant director, who was unaware that it was loaded. Hutchins was shot in the chest and director Joel Souza, who was standing behind him, was wounded in the shoulder.

An email from IATSE Local 44 to its members said the gun was loaded in a “live round,” even though law enforcement said so. “Nothing has been determined yet.” None of the people spoke consequences consider that Alec Baldwin was responsible for Hutchin’s death.

Now, Baldwin his silence was broken at the shooting, wrote, “There are no words to express my shock and sadness about the horrific accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins.”
