Once Shepard held Keystone for the third time in a row Grunt: Rite of Passage on Mass Effect 2, the ground will start to shake, and a loudspeaker will talk about the purpose of the krogan live against the genophage. Shepard and their squad can see a blue antenna somewhere far away. Shooting it will capture the creature’s attention and cause it to start, starting at the five-minute clock. It will also eventually emerge on its own.

Thresher Maw’s main attack is acid spitting, which causes AOE damage. It usually attacks three times, then tunnels underground and changes locations. Shepard can follow where it goes because of the dust colors it starts as it moves. It is also covered with weapon, which Shepard and their squad must destroy to retrieve the creature. If it comes as a hit against Shepard and damages their shields, it will take shields that take longer to recover than usual. It only takes about three consecutive direct hits to kill Shepard, so it is important to find the cover.

Many of the metal columns in the tall pavilion may have been damaged by one hit by the acid spit Thresher Maw, but any of the columns reinforced with concrete, especially those near Thresher Maw, could not be destroyed. These are the best places to find cover. Shepard had to hug the column and change sides when Thresher Maw was in motion to make sure they were fully protected at all times. Players with established Shepard as an Infiltrator should be aware that they cannot be protected while Cloaked, and the Thresher Maw can still accurately target, attack, and kill them.

Shepard, Grunt, and Jacob in Tuchanka in Mass Effect 2

The weakest point pointed out for the Thresher Maw is its blue tongue. There would appear to be more damage when the shots landed there than anywhere else. Shepard must carefully select their third squad with abilities, such as Inferno Grenade, Incinerate, Incendiary Ammo, Armor-Piercing Ammo, and Reave to be effective. In addition, using the Concussive Shot from Grunt when Thresher Maw surfaces will stagger it, causing it to attack multiple times before retreating for that phase.

While heavy weapons like the Kain and the Collector Particle Beam can be useful to chip into Thresher Maw’s armor, the Heavy Pistols are just as effective if upgraded first. Players can also choose weapons that have a natural increase in armor piercing abilities if they don’t use Armor Piercing Ammo.

Once Shepard and their team defeated Thresher Maw in Mass Effect 2, Grunt’s Rite ends, even if there is still time left. For defeating Thresher Maw, Shepard will receive 937 Experience instead of the usual 750. Other krogans will react to the news and express respect for Shepard and Grunt. Shepard also learns that no krogan from Clan Urdnot was able to kill a Thresher Maw during the Rite other than Wrex. Finally, in return to Tuchanka, EDI will inform Shepard that there are already breeding requests for Grunt, including one for Shepard, consistent with their killing of the creature.
