How to Raise Your Chocobo Companion

Final Fantasy XIV introduces new features throughout its life, some as part of a full expansion and others as an ongoing regular update. It even includes plans to change the main story line quest. With the likely influx of new and returning players trying out a wide selection of jobs, it’s possible to have a lot of activity in the open world of the game. To ease the difficulty of finding and grinding, it is a good idea to bring a Chocobo Companion to battle.

After completing some of the Main Scenario Quests at level 20, players can get a Chocobo by joining one of the three Large Companies in Eorzea. Each company has a blue search term called “My Little Chocobo, ”Which players can complete to get a Chocobo. on FFXIV, Players can summon their Chocobo using Gysahl Greens, which can be purchased from NPCs of 36 Gil. Chocobo can be summoned for 30 minutes by default, but players can extend the duration by using two more Gysahl Greens.

Chocobo Companions can act like an additional party member, with the abilities to tank, repair, and deal damage. As they help kill monsters, they gain their own EXP and access new powers. Even better, players who own a residence in the city can passively train their Chocobo during downtime or even while asleep. However, it is important to note that players must use Chocobo while Mob Farming, Fate Farming, or stable feeding. In addition, players should not ignore Weekly Logs because it provides a lot of experience points for the teammate.

Opening of the Chocobo Companion in Final Fantasy XIV

Chocobo Companions in Final Fantasy XIV

To get a Chocobo Companion, you must first get a Chocobo ride from level 20 quests My Little Chocobo. There are three different searches, depending on your current Grand Company:

  • Maelstrom: from R’ashaht Rhiki of Limsa Lominsa Upper Decks X: 13, Y: 12
  • Twin Adder: from Vorsaile Heouloix of New Gridania X: 9.5, Y: 11
  • Immortal Rat: from Swift to Ul’dah Steps by Nald X: 8.5, Y: 9

If you have Chocobo, you can make it a companion in battle through level 30 quests My Feisty Chocobo from Docette in the South Shroud X: 17, Y: 28. During the quest, you should obtain Gysahl Greens, sold by most merchants in residences and near the town of Aetherytes.

After the quest, consuming a Gysahl Green while in the field will summon your Chocobo in an hour. This timer is stopped while being mounted, in a city, testing instance content, or logged out. When the timer ends, your Chocobo will leave but will immediately return with another Gysahl Green. Your Chocobo is always on the same level as you, even if you’re in sync now. If you are at a party, all eight members can each use their own personal Chocobo.

Ranking Your Chocobo in Final Fantasy XIV

Even if your Chocobo matches your character level, it won’t be fully powered until it gains rank and experience. Chocobos gain EXP if you can kill monsters around the level of your field work, which can be useful if you’ve already done field content like Fates or Beast Tribe quests. This form of level grinding can take a while, so you can add to it by opening the Challenge Log via the level 15 quest Facing the Challenge from I’tolwann to Limsa Lominsa Upper Decks X: 11.5, Y: 11. Once unlocked, every week (starting Tuesday 04:00 AM EST) you can get 5% off your Chocobo level in EXP by killing 20 enemies, and 10 % more by defeating another 100.

Strong Training

If you or your Free Company own property such as an apartment or land, then you most likely have access to a Chocobo stable. First complete the level 30 quest Bird in the Hand from Luquelot to Central Shroud X: 20, Y: 21. You can fence your Chocobo in the stable and feed it every hour to gain EXP. Best of all, other players can feed your Chocobo whether you’re busy or offline. If your Chocobo eats enough of the same feed while stable, they will get a bonus if they eat it in the field as follows:

  • Sylkis Bud: Attack
  • Mimett Gourd: Healing
  • Pahsana Fruit: The fight will escalate
  • Tanatalplant: High HP
  • Curiel Root: EXP Height

It is important to have someone to keep the stable neat; a dirty stable has a penalty EXP during feeding. Also, be sure to release your Chocobo after being fed, as it may not be called to the field if it is stable now.

Above Rank 10

Your Chocobo’s initial max rank is 10 but can be increased by 1 rank (to a maximum of 20) by feeding them Thavnairian onion (Note that they gain zero EXP until their rank limit is raised). You can get guaranteed onions from level 50 quests Placing and Stable Work from Mathye in The Pillars X: 6, Y: 9, and the level 57 quest The True Nature of a Hunter from Hevoix in The Dravanian Forelands X: 31, Y: 22.

More onions can be obtained by planting in your apartment or land, usually from crossbreeding other seeds and plants with some luck. It also means that some gardeners are likely to sell Thavnairian Onions on Market Boards for extremely high premiums. Check your server boards for the current best price, and remember that you can avoid market fees by purchasing directly in the city where the retainer is sold.

Also, if all the prices are high in your world, you can visit other servers in your data center by using Aetheryte in Limsa Lominsa, Gridania, or Ul’dah. You can buy (but not sell) on the Market Board in another world.

Chocobo Skills in Final Fantasy XIV

Each time your Chocobo advances in rank they will be awarded Skill Points (SP). From rank 1-10 you will get the SP equivalent to that rank, 11-16 will give 10 SP, while 17-20 will add an additional 1 to the previous level (11, 12, 13, 14) for the grand total of 165 SP. These points can be applied to one of three skill trees to improve the performance of your Chocobo. If you are not happy with your chosen skill, they can be reset using a Reagan Pepper sold to all Grand Companies at 48,000 Grand Company Seals or 20 Allied Seals.

The Attacker tree will make your Chocobo a DPS, making them valuable for defeating touch enemies. They can use Choco Slash for 150 Potency, Choco Beak to damage over time (130 instant Potency and 360 Potency in 18 seconds), Choco Rush to inflict Stun, and the conical area to attack Choco Blast. This tree can also give bonus Strength and Attack Speed to the other two. Learning all of the Attacker skills will also unlock Dragoon barding to be worn by your companion.

The Healer tree will give your Chocobo a way to recover HP, which should be a top priority if you’re primarily playing DPS jobs. Choco Regen heals 450 Potency in 18 seconds, Choco Cure heals 300 Potency instantly, Choco Surge boosts all healing by 30%, and Choco Medica heals a around 150 Potency. The tree also gives a bonus Mind and HP. Learning all the skills will unlock White Mage barding.

The Defender tree allows your Chocobo to survive more, however, its Enmity generation is not very tall, making it difficult for it to serve as a real tank. You only need to put extra points on this tree after making a better investment in Attacker and Healer. Choco Kick deals 150 Potency damage and increased Enmity, Choco Kick can inflict 20% Slow in 12 seconds, Choco Guard reduces future damage by 15% in 15 seconds, and Choco Strike will give 150 Potency to a cone with added Enmity. The Defender tree also gives an extra bonus of Strength and HP. Completing the entire tree will receive Paladin-style barding.

Chocobo can access many of its abilities to act as a good member of the support party. Some of the abilities can be classified as Tank, DPS, or Healer. Players have to be put on hold some effort into the weekly log rewards because it gives Chocobo significant experience for leveling up faster than usual. It can take weeks or months to fully reach the highest ranking, but if your Chocobo is run it will make many quests, Fates, and other open world adventures much safer and faster. You can win fights that are higher than your current level, or solo treasure hunts designed for entire parties.
