“I See Everything Triple Up”

Despite his fame and fortune, Cardi B never forgot his Bronx roots and always took the opportunity to speak for the working class. Earlier this week, he took on inflation by pointing to rising grocery prices.

“Grocery prices are ridiculous right now,” Cardi said tweet on Tuesday night. “Maybe you should eat outside!!” In the next tweet, he added“Bitch why does lettuce cost 6 dollars where I live?”

After some fans questioned why a rich celebrity would care about food prices, Cardi shared a minute video breaking down the importance of budgeting and why he wants to use his platform to help lower prices.

“When I’m complaining about food prices, and all the muthafuckas are like, ‘Aren’t you rich? Why are you complaining about lettuce? Why are you complaining about this?’ That shows me if you’re successful, if you’ve got money, you’ll be broke sooner rather than later,” he said. “Because you didn’t budget. I get a summary of the money spent in my house every week. So, when I started seeing that groceries tripled, it was like, ‘Oh, what the fuck happened?’”

According to Cardi, when she went to the supermarket to find out where her money was going, she saw the grocery prices “triple up” for herself. “Lettuce was like $2 a few months ago, now it’s like fucking [$]7. Of course, I have something to say,” he said. “Because if I think that’s crazy, I can imagine what middle class people or people in the hood think. So, yeah, I have something to say. The fuck! And I have a big platform, so that I want anyone responsible [for] these fucking prices to lower that shit.

Overall, grocery prices rose 12% in 2022 through November, outpacing the 7.1% increase in overall inflation, according to CNN. In particular, the price of lettuce was affected due to lack due to unseasonably high temperatures and crop diseases in California.

With that in mind and other factors like the war in Ukraine and supply chain issues, it doesn’t look like prices are going down anytime soon. While Cardi can’t stop the prices from rising, at least she can talk about what’s possible through her platform of nearly 28 million Twitter followers.
