Inspired by some of the greats of electronic music, Maurya Sevak is on a mission to make his own impact in the genre.
Hailing from Toronto, the rising DJ and dance music producer recently released his latest single, “Horizon.” Mixing progressive house with elements of trance, the electrifying track stems from Sevak’s love of music by artists such as David Guetta and Armin van Buuren.
He said he was “absolutely amazed” by the dance music pathfinders — specifically their performances at Belgium’s iconic Tomorrowland festival. And with their music serving as a catalyst, the young beatsmith has worked hard to carve out his own voice.
We reached out to Sevak to discuss his direction, favorite music making tools and more.
EDM.com: Tell us about your latest release, “Horizon.” Is there a story behind making that track?
Maurya Sevak: I could see the vision of a beautiful, full of nature scenery from a beach somewhere in the Mediterranean, similar to the artwork of a song. Thinking of the scene itself inspires me to create a rumbling melody with a large room pull and combine it with a few strings and a loud drop.
EDM.com: What happened to the composition of “Horizon”? Do you have a favorite studio equipment or software that you use on this track that you would like to promote?
Maurya Sevak: I composed “Horizon” in two different parts: the first was the catchy, large intro to the room and the drops, and the second was the enigmatic, orchestral strings breakdown. My favorite software to use on this track is from Native Instruments Kontakt 6 | Complete violin library, which I used for the solo violin break. It’s so beautiful and realistic to listen to, it gives the feeling that a real violinist is performing in front of an audience.

EDM.com: Where does “Horizon” sit, compared to your previous releases, “Desert Rose” (a Sting cover), “Liar” and “X”?
Maurya Sevak: “Horizon” is a very different track compared to “Desert Rose,” “Liar” and “X.” Unlike a progressive-house or future-rave track, “Horizon” is a pure, large-room powerhouse with a touch of fluttering emotions and catchy melodies.
As an instrumental compared to the previous three vocal tracks, “Horizon” is made for EDM fans who just want to hear the rising sound of the music without having to divert their attention to the lyrics.
EDM.com: Talk about “Liar” and what was accomplished to make that track.
Maurya Sevak: “Lie” is a track designed to release the listener’s emotions and touch the listener’s soul strings. This is a future-rave powerhouse! The track begins with an arpeggiated lead melody in the upcoming rave synth patch. I lowered the rhythm and started looking for a euphoric, dreamy melody. To the end, I added an Acid 303 sound with Serum, which plays off-beat.
EDM.com: You look so energetic when you perform. What live shows have you attended that have affected you the most? Is there a specific artist or show that you would like to be a producer and DJ, yourself?
Maurya Sevak: At my age — I was born in 2005 — I wasn’t allowed to attend 18+ live concerts, I attended the Cityview drive-in concert at deadmau5 in Toronto and the Tomorrowland virtual festivals. I idolized David Guetta and Armin van Buuren, and they inspired me to become a DJ-producer myself.
It’s their Tomorrowland 2018 sets that do just that. The music they played was so engaging and lively and I was immediately attracted to it and started imagining myself playing there on stage and entertaining the crowd.
