Iron Man Just Repeated One of the Darkest Ages of the X-Men

Iron Man recently had his own horrible Dark Phoenix moment, where an entire planet and everything on it was destroyed … and it was all his fault.

Warning: there are spoilers for Iron Man #15!

by Marvel Man of iron recently joined himself Dark Phoenix moment – and just like the original event, an entire planet and civilization is destroyed thanks to the efforts of the titular hero. Tony Stark probably more powerful than ever with his new weapon – and his power was not yet enough to stop Korvac. on Iron Man #15, the battle between Iron Man and Korvac resulted in a remarkable tragedy, the likes of which have only been seen once before in the Marvel Universe.

The power hungry Korvac is maddened by a severe case of megalomania, and seeks the power of a God. Iron Man is the only one who can stop him, and is wrapped up in a new one suit of armor filled with Cosmic Power, both have interstellar battles throughout the universe. Unfortunately, one planet was caught in crossfire, suffering a severely similar fate to a planet in the D’Bari system in Dark Phoenix Saga.

Iron Man and Korvac fight in space, and a fierce Korvac attacks Stark, crying “You’re a tinkerer who builds mechanical suits and nothing else!” But most of the issue does not concern any warrior, but the frightened citizens who have created a civilization on a destroyed planet, too far from Korvac’s announcement. People are scattering in the streets, holding on to their families and running towards the shelters, but it is uncertain whether they will be caught in a clash between the two cosmic entities. The planet has only a few minutes to live. The only survivor of the devastation escaped a small escape pod with a copy of the entire history of the planet – but he was wounded to death, and died soon after.

Killing billions on a panel is the same on Dark Phoenix’s greatest tragedy. Jean Gray, hungry for power, consumed the entire star, causing it to become a supernova. The energy of the exploding star eventually engulfed the fourth planet in the system, home to a peaceful civilization. The people below have only a few moments “… to curse a cruel fate or make their peace with their God. Then they will all die.” This ultimately leads to Jean Grey’s trial and final death, and while the battle between Iron Man and Korvac is different – Stark doesn’t intend to attack the underworld – the timing is the same. Cosmic beings exist and do not care about the “little” beings below.

Korvac is eventually defeated and Iron Man retains his cosmic power, but as far as one knows, he can’t travel back in time to restore the world. Everything on the planet depicted in the war is dead, and likely years of history are gone forever. Man of iron be as powerful as ever, but it is of little value to the innocents of the ruined world … if they are still alive.
