Jason Momoa’s Best Action Movies

To borrow a phrase from Will Ferrell, “Jason Momoa is so hot right now!” But what are those best Jason Momoa movies ever?

The muscle-packing superstar just returned for the performance of his life Hurry up X, left an impression on Duneand is about to reprise his role as Aquaman in James Wan’s long-delayed Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Since his rise to fame as Khal Drogo on HBO’s Game of Thrones, the steely actor has made his presence felt both on and off camera. Love her, and I wish her well in Hollywood by offering more nuanced roles in the future. With Fast X hitting theaters, check out Jason Momoa’s best action movies to date.

Conan the Barbarian (2011)

Momoa as Conan the Barbarian makes a lot of sense, and it’s a shame no one bothered to show up to see his magnetic take on the character in Marcus Nispel’s 2011 remake. True, it is not best movie. It’s funny and incredibly graphic, but it’s also fun in a cheesy cornball way.

Momoa flaunts his gear and looks good with a sword right at home, slashing bad guys with his big sword. His performance leans more towards the serious and sad side. However, he still packs a nasty punch and commands the screen well as the legendary warrior, which is why it kicks off our list of the best Jason Momoa action movies. Maybe next time, someone will give him a smarter script.

Aquaman (2018)

James Wan’s Aquaman might not be DC’s best offering. However, it’s still a colorful adventure enhanced by splashy CGI and Momoa’s fierce charm. The actor brings a refreshing and charismatic presence to the character of Arthur Curry, his muscular frame perfectly capturing Aquaman’s strength and power. The film also gives him a bit of emotional complexity as he wrestles with his destiny as the true heir to the throne of Atlantis.

While Wan sometimes lets the goofy visuals overpower his narrative and perhaps spends less time on the underwater battles, Momoa is always likable. Like a true king, he carries the superhero car on his strong shoulders.

Hurry X

Having recently seen Fast X in theaters, I felt obligated to include it here in this list. It features Momoa’s best performance and stands out as a kick-ass action piece. Momoa has an absolute blast hamming it up as Dante Reyes, the flamboyant, angry son of Hernan Reyes, is easily the most memorable villain Dom’s crew has fought. Part fool, part comedian, Dante enjoys torturing his victims and spends his afternoons talking to corpses and finding new ways to ruin Dom’s life.

Through it all, Momoa floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee; his infectious energy cast a spell over the entire production and made Fast and Furious feel fresh. I can’t wait to see more of this guy. Oh, and yes, the film is a wild, ambitious action extravaganza that will make you cheer, laugh, roll your eyes, and grind your teeth. This is a two-hour version of the Universal Studios 3D attraction. If you can get enough of the cheese, there’s a lot to enjoy here, which is why it’s easy inclusion on our list of the best Jason Momoa action movies.

Dune (2021)

I love Dune. It is a masterpiece of science fiction. A towering cinematic achievement of the highest order. Its only flaw is that it has no end and a kind of conclusions. Obviously, the story continues in Dune 2. However, after nearly three hours of heavy exposition, you expect some kind of explosive payoff. However, everything used to be epic. From the stunning production design to the amazing special effects, terrific acting, and thrilling action, Dune delivers the goods. Momoa is on hand as Duncan Idaho, the adventure-seeking friend of Paul Atreides.

Once again, the actor is about to steal her effortless charm. Duncan is one of those guys who walks into a room and immediately gets everyone’s attention. He is fearless, cunning, brave, and skilled in the art of, well, everything. Momoa’s role was limited and exited too early for my taste. Regardless, in his short screentime, Momoa kicks and proves why he belongs in so many blockbusters.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021)

Zack Snyder’s Justice League is my favorite Jason Momoa action flick. I loved this four-hour superhero epic, a rich blend of drama, emotion, and incredible action. There aren’t many comic book films that match Snyder’s grand scope or beautifully crafted visuals.

Momoa returns as Aquaman, though his performance here is more stoic and nonsensical. He is a bitter outsider who struggles with his purpose in life and is haunted by past mistakes. He can throw a wicked trident when called upon, but the character is also broken and searching for meaning. Luckily, he joins Batman, Superman, Flash, Wonder Woman, and Cyborg to face Steppenwolf, a ruthless villain who plans to conquer the world in the name of Darkseid. The results are amazing and why it’s on our list of the best Jason Momoa action movies.
