If you’ve ever visited Austin’s famous historic Sixth Street, you’ve probably thought to yourself: “Man, I’d love to step into an 18-year-old pool of vomit, but what a street. Granted Needs is a comedy club owned and operated by a man with a podcast. Right now Joe RoganThe new club Comedy Mothership has officially opened its doors, those prayers have been answered.
The Hollywood Reporter visited the Comedy Mothership for its opening night this week, after two and a half years of development. Now that the Joe Rogan’s experience host officially calls the Texas capital his home, apparently he’s trying to make it the capital of the “anti-cancel culture” joke, too.
“I’m drunk and on mushrooms at my new club!” Rogan exclaimed at the start of the show. “It was very long when I went on stage. I need to connect this time… You can’t kick me out of my own club, bitch!”
JRE friends including Ron White, Tim Dillion, Tony Hinchcliffe, and Roseanne Barr, with the latter taking the opportunity to slam her former network home: “After 30 years of fighting ABC to have Black people writing Black characters on my show and then having the same fucking libtards turn around and call me a racist, it really pissed me off,” he said, praising Comedy Mothership for recalling a time when the “comedy was fucking king,” whatever that means!
Recaps from the night included pretty much everything you’d expect from a Rogan-hosted event: Bearded bros, transphobic punchlines, a two-drink minimum, and an audience participation game called ” Kanye or the Jews?” which we can imagine without hindrance (THR the rules of the game are not revealed, which is probably for the best). Rogan also mentioned that his dream podcast host would be Hunter Biden – the podcaster is the a self-proclaimed “bleeding heart liberal,” after all.
“I think I just like risks,” Rogan said during a Q&A, which sounded like code for “making people crazy.” “I was like, ‘Yeah, let’s buy a building on a street full of crack addicts.’ Like I want someone to say ‘no’ to me. They were all like, ‘OK, go ahead.'”
The one above: With its address on “Dirty” Sixth Street, the Comedy Mothership probably won’t attract many locals.
Last month, troubled frontman David Draiman called out Rogan perpetuates stereotypes of Jews after the podcast host said “the idea that Jews don’t like money…is like saying Italians don’t like pizza.” That came just weeks after Rogan’s confession he has no evidence to support his claim that American high schools put litter boxes in bathrooms for students who identify as furry.
