Joni Mitchell brought a surprise concert at the Newport Folk Festival on Sunday, July 24, 2022. Today, he announced that the set will be captured on a new live album Joni Mitchell in Newportwhich from July 28 through Rhino. The album has liner notes written by Cameron Crowe. “Mitchell came out from the side of the stage, gracefully swaying, in good summer style with a beret and sunglasses. His good humor immediately set the tone,” wrote Crowe. “It show was an intimate gathering of friends, not unlike the Joni Jams he hosted in his own living room during the last few years of recovery. Smiling broadly, Mitchell made his surprise appearance, taking his seat on stage next to [Brandi] Carlyle. Within minutes, the news spread around the world. Mitchell returned, sparkling with enthusiasm, delivering a gentle and soulful set of 13 songs, culminating in a joyful rendition of ‘The Circle Game.’”
Mitchell was joined by Brandi Carlile, Wynonna Judd, Marcus Mumford, Lucius, and more at the Newport Folk Festival. she performance at the Gorge Amphitheater in Quincy, Washington, with Brandi Carlile as part of another Joni Jam on June 10.
