Joy of the Holiday Sign – Christmas Wall Art

Here’s a unique (and inexpensive) way to decorate for Christmas – and you don’t have to be an artist to do it!

Let’s make some wall art out of scrap wood, paint some letters on it, and add a store bought wreath!

This JOY sign is easy to make!

How Do I Build It?

Cut the boards using a circular saw, handsaw or jigsaw, or if you have a chop/miter saw.

Place the boards on a flat surface.

Figure out how long it will take to cut the 1×2 back support and cut it.

Then attach the sign boards to the 1x2s using your chosen fastener (or hot glue).

How to Get the Weathered Look? How to stain?

Now it’s time to paint or stain the wood back. My boards are weathered (pallet wood is fine) so I didn’t apply them. If you have new boards, here are some options:

  • Weathered Wood Accelerator by Varathane
  • Gray Stain
  • Steel Wool and Vinegar Treatment
  • Leave it out in the sun for a few months (maybe do that next summer)

Painting the Letters of JOY

Place your store-bought wreath in the center of the sign. Now you can figure out where the letters should be.

I used 1×2 to make my J and Y letters, leaving 1x2s wide on the outside, and then the letters themselves were 1×2 wide. I painted the inside of the letters with white paint.

Great Kids Craft Project

Then I just added a nail and hung a wreath from the nail (wreath from Home Depot). My little niece helped out and was also proud of the finished project.

Easy Way to Display a Wreath Without Hangers

I love it, and hope you do too!

Perfect on Shelves or Ledges or Mantles!

We don’t have a coat, though this floating white shelf we made a while back perfect.

In a small space, wall decoration is your best choice. Some fun holiday pillow covers bounce the Holiday spirit around the room, and is the right amount of Christmas decoration for our small space.

PS – Don’t forget to pin this wooden Joy sign for next year!
