Just Killing Hulu in the Building Makes Comfort Complicated a Second Season | TV/Streaming

In season two, our top three, Short’s Oliver, Steve Martin’s Charles, and Selena Gomezof Mabel, continue to walk that line to great effect. Oliver still gets all his calories from dips, Charles remains awkward in almost all social situations, and Mabel continues to deadpan her life in and out of the apartment building they share, Arconia. But this second season, we’ve all also seen many layers of our favorite real crime podcasters, especially how they build or sustain the community — through love interests, their families, and of course. their friendship with each other.

The show finds humor in this layering of complexity. There was a time when Mabel, as a young resident, was tasked with communicating with Charles ’daughter Lucy. He could have understood Gen Zer’s language and perspective but he was easily overwhelmed. It’s a nice touch of the show’s ongoing cross-generational humor, which often mocks the septuagenarian characters (true line: “He doesn’t answer any calls or text communications!”) The youngsters pass by and even the highest of us. old, the show says, and that’s not tragic, it’s pleasing. A reason to smile and nod.

In fact, the show seems to be designed so that its audience nods knowing the deal. The first few episodes are full of lines like Schumer’s. As our three amateur crimefighters begin their second murder mystery, they flash to each other about what lessons they can learn from their first (podcast? TV?) Season.

“Only Murders in the Building” is careful to bring back the audience’s favorite supporting characters and devices from the first season. Once again, we capture episodes from different perspectives, penetrating the inside and outside of the lives of Arconia residents. The show spends its time all wisely, reminding us why we enjoyed these characters to begin with and adding layers to our understanding of it. For example, there’s an entire episode dedicated to Bunny, which is primarily under his hard exterior even though we know how and why he perfectly lives up to his tough persona in New York. Even the often lonely-hearted Howard gets a sympathetic reading, which extends beyond the stereotypical eccentric cat owner.
