The Pitch: When we last saw Charles Haden-Savage (Steve Martin), Oliver Putnam (Martin Short), and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez), things don’t look great for the trio.
Season 1 on Hulu’s Only Murders In The Building was a hit in 2021 after the journey of the said crew as strangers and neighbors grew into the beautiful New York apartment The Arconia into a troubled family. After solving the murder of fellow Arconia resident Tim Kono through a real crime podcast – and somehow succeeding in this matter – Charles, Oliver, and Mabel think that all that is left to do is to pop champagne and celebrate.
If a mysterious text urges them to get out of the building while they still can, things get worse – Charles and Oliver stumble upon another murder scene, this time with Mabel, covered in blood, standing on top on the body of the building board. president Bunny (a remarkable legend Jayne Houdyshell). In terms of newcomers, the appearance of Lucy, Charles ’estranged, former and unofficially adopted daughter, is a highlight- some sharp writing puts two of the quirks of Gen- Z (deliberately colliding with clothing, “mental health tick,” child. Ghosts trying to hex the moon) and the fact that while Charles and and Oliver probably don’t have any earthly idea if what he was talking about, nor the millennial Mabel. Season 2 is solid, but even if it’s not very fun, it’s worth it alone to hear Martin Short say the words “hoe phase.”
Cara Delevigne plays a new figure who pulls their own weight in Season 2, which seems to have done nothing in Mabel’s life as Alice, a unique and sophisticated actress who, of course, can ‘g hides his own secrets. Delevigne and Gomez’s chemistry is easily believable, perhaps because of a real -world friendship, or perhaps Delevigne’s overly eyebrows.
Amy Schumer also appears as a tall version of her own public persona, something that could have been better before the fall from her hosting of The Oscars, but still good here. Sadly missing (at least in the eight episodes given by critics) is Aaron Dominguez, a Season 1 attribute as the wrongly convicted Oscar.
