Lazy Day Knot Braid Hairstyle (Video Tutorial)

For those of us with long hair, a ponytail is a daily necessity sometimes, but if you’re like me, you want to feel more pulled together. This super easy, lazy day knot braid hairstyle is one of my top picks. It looks like you’ve intricately braided your hair, but in reality you’re just tying knots and overlapping sections of hair to create a chic look that’s casual but works for a professional look.

One of the things I love about this style is that it only takes a few minutes to put together and you don’t need any special skills to do it. This is one of the styles that are new and make it look good. Add some accessories like a ribbon, barrette, or a special tie at the base and you can take it from casual to high.

This style is a personal favorite because it only takes 10 minutes or less to make. In addition, it is ideal for days when my hair needs washing but I am short on time. It keeps all the hair from being pulled out of my face, while still being a stylish and professional look when needed.

What Should I Do With This Hairstyle?

One of the best things about it is that you don’t need anything more than a comb and hair ties. I prefer to use small rubber band style hair ties because they are slim and don’t create extra bulk. Try to match the shade of your hair if possible for a smoother look.

How Can I Make This Hairstyle Look More Professional?

While it’s likely to be put together and look professional as ever, you may find that you want to make it a little more clean for work wear. While this is a lazy day hairstyle, it is still great for wearing in any professional setting. If you want to update it a bit for your workplace, below are some ideas that will add class and style.

  • Use a comb and gel when pulling each section of hair back to smooth flyaways.
  • Make a part in the center of your hair before you start and pull with a comb for an exact parting of your hair.
  • Tie a beaded ribbon in each knot to add more.
  • Braid the bottom part of the hair then place it under the main part and put it in place similar to a bun.
  • Add a decorative comb to the top of the hairstyle before you start tying it.

How to Do the Lazy Day Knot Hairstyle

I find that braids are best done on freshly washed hair. This hairstyle, however, works great on freshly washed hair or dirty hair because you’re working with braids between each knot. Either option works, so this is a hairstyle you can keep in your arsenal for any day of the week.

Before you start, make sure to comb your hair and make sure there are no tangles or knots. If necessary, use a little detangler on your hair at this point. You can also add a little mouse or gel if you want the style to last longer or control flyaways and fuzz.

Step 1

Pull back a 1 inch section of hair from the top front, just above your ears. You pull back a small section, leaving the hair on top of your head combed down. If desired, you can put a strong part in your hair, but I like the simple combed back look of it.

Cut these two pieces and then tie them on your head. You want to loop a knot but don’t make it too tight. The goal is for it to look loose but still pulled together. Tie with a rubber band. You can pull a few hairs to soften a little if desired.

Step 2

Repeat this process, turning another section of hair from each side. Make a loop and tie it like a knot, making sure that when you do this, you tie it separately from the one above.

You want to separate the dangling pieces each time. Continue this process, until you reach the base of your neck.

Pull out a little bit of hair at a time to create more knots and a bigger braid, or leave it with larger sections for a slightly sloppier look with a bigger, thicker braid.

Step 3

Pull the pieces from under your last knot and tie them around the base. Tie with a rubber band.

Continue doing this until all the hair is gathered and knotted then tied with a rubber band.

Step 4

If desired, you can wrap a little hair around the bottom tie and place it under the band to cover the elastic. The rest of your hair can also be braided at this point or left loose underneath.

A ribbon or bow can be added or left out for a clean and sophisticated look.

Instructions

  1. On both sides of the head, pull back a 1″ section of hair from just above the ears. Leave the ends of your hair combed but only pull the side sections. Once they are in behind your head and centered, fold and loop to make a bun. Combine, then tie with a hairband.
  2. Repeat this process bringing back another section of hair from each side above the ears. Make a knot and tie it separately from the first section.
  3. Continue this process to the nape of the neck, leaving different pieces hanging each time and only making knots on the sides that you pulled back.
  4. Once in the name of the neck, take the pieces from the back that hang down, and make a final tie above the base of the others. Tie it with a rubber band.
  5. Pull a section of this remaining hair and wrap it around the hair tie then secure it behind and under the braid.
