Lightyear Same-Sex Kiss Warning Posted by Oklahoma Movie Theater

An Oklahoma movie theater posted a warning about same-sex kissing happening in the new Pixar Lightyear film, telling parents they will fast forward to the scene.

Lightyear, the new Toy Story spinoff that tells the original story of Buzz Lightyear, faces international controversy for the brief appearance of two women kissing at the beginning of the film. The 89-ER Movie Theater in Kingfisher, a town about 50 miles northwest of Oklahoma City, posted a message in the building’s window about the scene, urging moviegoers to post photos of the sign on social media.

“Parents’ Attention: The management of this theater discovered after booking ‘Lightyear’ that there was a same-sex kissing scene within the first 30 minutes of the Pixar film, ”the message read. “We’ll do everything we can to fast-forward that scene, but it’s not exact. We apologize for any inconvenience this later discovery of this scene may have caused. ”

The sign was reportedly posted over the weekend of June 17, but it was obviously bad: Local NBC affiliate KFOR quotes a parent who chose to take her child to another theater to watch Lightyear, explaining that the message of the sign “creates fear” in LGBTQ+ people. By June 20, the sign had been removed.

Kingfisher isn’t the only place to find a problem Lightyear’s same-sex kissing scene. Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates prohibited the film in full. However, Disney’s inclusion in the kiss marks a concerted effort to regain goodwill in the LGBTQ + community following reports that the company was donating to each sponsor of Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill – the scene is cut from the movie until Pixar staff publicly accuses the company censorship.
