Fresh off the release on his return single “Power of Heaven, ” Lorde spoke to Zane Lowe about the song, its genesis, and its inspirations to Apple Music. “I was at Martha’s Vineyard with my best friend, Cazzie, who lived in her house. We just had a big swim, all day, ”Lorde recalls the day he started the song. “My hair was wet, and when I got to my room, I had a little Yamaha DX keyboard, and I was already starting to sing… and what it knew.” He continues:
Zane Lowe, a native of New Zealand, told his compatriots he got the “sound of a New Zealand Summer.” Lorde agreed and said he was also sampling cicadas for “Solar Power.”
Shortly afterwards, Lorde discussed the background vocals of Phoebe Bridgers and Clairo about “Solar Power.” He said:
Elsewhere, Lord recognizes the sonic similarity of his Primal Scream song “Loaded. ”He admits:
I have never heard of Primal Scream in my life. I was told to check them out. I wrote the song on the piano, and then we found out, it was, it was like “Loaded.” It’s one of those crazy things to like, they’re just the spiritual ancestors of the song. I reached out to Bobby [Gillespie], and she’s very pretty about it. And he said, You know, these things happen; you get a vibe that we’ve gotten over the years. And he gave us his blessing. So let the record be “Loaded” 100%, the original blueprint for this, but we got it organically. And I’m glad we did it.
