The album, recorded at storytelling RCA Studio A in Nashville, features contributions from Drew Erickson, Rob Moose, and Gabriel Cabezas, including backing vocals from Carlile and Sheryl Crow. The album came after the band new collaboration with the War on Drugs.

“It’s a record that asks you not to sit through hard times, but to dance through them,” Lucius ’Jess Wolfe said in a statement. “It touches on all of these levels of grief — and some of that is devastation, on the other hand. Having the full spectrum of the experience that we had, or that I had in my divorce, or that we were locked in, that stopped our careers, let’s say. I think you can hear and feel the whole emotion and hopefully you can find joy in the dark. It exists. That’s what we did Second Nature and why we want it to sound this way: our focus is to dance our way through the darkness. ”
