Matt Reeves Thinks The Cloverfield Monster Is A Child

2023 marks the 15th anniversary of the found footage monster film Cloverfieldand in a recent interview with SyfyDirector Matt Reeves talked about how the backstory the team developed for the monster.

Reeves — who directed the 2008 film — was asked if he had a backstory for the monster, which has since become affectionately known as “Clover.” According to Reeves, he did, mainly because, in order to direct the film, he also wanted to understand what the monster was going through. With that in mind, the team behind the film conceived the monster as a child, who goes through separation anxiety and like the fear of the city that it is terrible.

“We certainly did. Because you have to figure out how to handle the monster, so to speak,” Reeves explained. “So you have to understand what’s happening to them emotionally. And for me, the big secret is that the monster is a child and experiences separation anxiety. The reason the monster is scared is because they have appropriate bases to find their mother. Then, [the monster] it’s just like the main characters are scared, because it seems that there is nothing more scary than the human element fighting this giant monster element and, in fact, they are both just scared. That’s the mess. Not good anymore. So part of it is absolutely something that we talked about in the development of the creature and how I shot it.
