Mira Sorvino Criticizes Oscars for Removing Paul Sorvino from In Memoriam

Mira Sorvino criticized the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for abandoning his late father, Paul Sorvinofrom the 2023 Oscars In Memoriam segment.

“It’s confusing beyond belief that my beloved father and so many other amazingly brilliant late actors are gone,” Mira Sorvino wrote in Twitter. “The Oscars forgot about Paul Sorvino, but the rest of us never did!!”

The tweet came after Mira Sorvino shared a Instagram clip on Sunday night in her memorable 1996 Best Supporting Actress acceptance speech for the Powerful Aphrodite, where he thanked his father and he cried. “This night at the Oscars I am very happy for all the nominees and winners, but I am also touched in a thousand different ways when I think of the night I shared my Academy Award with my Dad, the great actor that Paul. Sorvino, who was never nominated,” he wrote in the initial caption. “This first year after his death is a bitter but beautiful memory.”

After Paul Sorvino was left out of the In Memoriam segment, Mira Sorvino edited the post and added that she was “deeply hurt and shocked that my father’s lifelong, irreplaceable, great contribution to the world of cinema has been overlooked in whoever made that list. We his adoring family, and you, his adoring public, know how amazing and incredible he is. We hope @theacademy does something to make this right.

In a statement given by People Magazine, Paul Sorvino’s widow Dee Dee called on the Academy to apologize for the exclusion. “Paul Sorvino is one of the greatest actors in the history of Hollywood cinema. It’s unthinkable that he will be left out of the In Memoriam part of the Oscars,” he said. “It’s a three-hour show, they can’t give another one minutes to get it? Paul Sorvino has given decades to this industry and is loved by all.

Paul Sorvino died at the age of 83 in July 2022 due to natural causes. He is known for his roles as Mafia don Paul Cicero in GoodfellasHenry Kissinger on Nixon, and Sgt. Frank Cerreta of Law and Order.

Other notable omissions from the In Memoriam segment include Anne Heche and Charlbi Dean (the latter starred in the Best Picture nominee Triangle of Sorrow). Leslie Jordan, Gilbert Gottfried, Cindy Williamsand what has just passed Tom Sizemore was also not mentioned in the telecast. However, Sorvino and the aforementioned actors were all memorialized in Oscar website.
