New The Blair Witch Project Movie Finds Director

More than two decades since the theater release of the original, Lionsgate returns to the supernatural horror franchise in a new The Blair Witch Project movie.

According to Production Weekly (via Bloody Disgusting), independent filmmaker Oliver Park has been tapped to helm the untitled Blair Witch sequel. Filming is expected to begin in late summer or fall this year.

Park is no stranger to the horror genre, having directed films like the short Still, A Night of Horror: Nightmare Radioand The Offering – with an episode of Strange Events. However, the untitled found footage movie marks his first project with a major studio.

Who’s Starring in the New Blair Witch Movie?

Lionsgate’s new The Blair Witch Project will be produced by Haxan Films, the same company behind the original 1999 movie. Original director Daniel Myrick and writer Eduardo Sanchez are attached as producers. More details about its plot and characters are still under wraps.

The original centered on a group of students making a documentary on the haunting story of Burkittsville, Maryland. Since its inception, the film has garnered critical and commercial success. It earned a worldwide gross of over $240 million against a reported budget of less than $1 million.

It spawned two sequels – 2000’s Book of Shadows from Joe Berlinger and 2016’s Blair Witch from Adam Wingard — along with a series of video games. This includes a successful title in 2019 from acclaimed horror developer Bloober Team (The Medium).
