Reznor and Ross added, SHIFT (Bad Man Vol. II) there were many guests, such as Dave Matthews, Becca Stevens, Meshell Ndegeocell, Kimbra, Rodrigo y Gabriela, and others. Sánchez began the project by approaching the artists and asking them for songs to deconstruct and reimagine through his “Bad Hombre” alter-ego. “I Think We’re Past That Now,” written by Reznor, Ross, and Sanchez with Reznor’s lyrics, is an exception to this approach.

In making the album, Sánchez told press materials:

My anger changed. And the fact that this material didn’t come from me changed the equation. It helped me bring a new perspective and a sense of wonder to “What else is this?” And as a result of the pandemic -related delays, I continued to ridicule about my pregnancy for a few years… and now have a truly epic baby.
