Oldboy Remastered Release Date Set for 20th Anniversary

Why is Oldboy back in theaters?

Last year, Neon announced that it had acquired the distribution rights to Oldboy, and unveiled a restored version that will hit theaters for its 20th anniversary. Ticket information is not yet available, but Neon will likely release more information as the release date approaches.

The original film — released on November 21, 2003 — did not receive a huge theatrical run in its initial release. This time, however, it’s almost guaranteed to make a splash.

Oldboy is the second installment in Park Chan-wook’s “Vengeance” trilogy, which also includes 2002’s Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and 2005’s Lady Vengeance. Not only is it considered one of the best revenge thrillers of all time, Oldboy is widely regarded as one of the best films of all time.

“Dae-Su is a bad drunk bailed out of the police station again by a friend,” reads the movie’s official synopsis. “However, he was abducted from the street and woke up in a cell, where he remained for the next 15 years, drugged unconscious when human contact was unavoidable, if not the only companion was television. And then, suddenly released, he is invited to follow his prison with a denouement that is very surprising. ”
