Paul Mescal took over as Lead of the 20-Year Project


Paul Mescal replaces Blake Jenner in Richard Linklater’s decade-spanning We are happy togetheraccording to a recent report from Top of the Line.

The report (which was also confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter) says that Jenner shot several scenes for the film — which is based on the 1981 musical by Stephen Sondheim and George Furth, itself based on the 1934 play of the same name by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart — but was replaced shortly after that. joined after allegations of domestic violence surfaced against him by his ex-wife Melissa Benoist (Supergirl).

These reports came out in November 2019, and while Jenner acknowledged them in an Instagram post in 2020, her time in the film seems to be over.

The project, which is set to shoot over a 20-year span (similar to Linklater’s Childhoodwhich was shot for 12 years), Mescal can now be seen (After the sun) step into the lead role of Broadway composer Franklin Shephard. Mescal will star alongside the already announced cast of Beanie Feldstein and Ben Platt. The film was originally announced back in 2019 and the first part of filming has been completed, so it is unclear how Mescal will fit in thanks to the film’s production style.

For Mescal, it’s another big role in a career that’s quickly becoming bigger. After starring in After the sun to rave reviews, Mescal is the latest to be cast Ridley Scott’s future Gladiator CONNECT. On top of that, he is the star of Garth Davis’ upcoming film Enemy with Saoirse Ronan, as well as with Andrew Haigh Strangers.

We are happy together, originally based on the 1934 play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, follows Franklin Shepard, a talented Broadway composer who abandons his New York theater career and all his friends to produce movie in Los Angeles. Like the play, the musical begins at the height of his Hollywood fame and moves backwards in time, showing snapshots of the most important moments in Frank’s life that shaped the man he is today.
