For most of us, Thanksgiving is about family, football, and pumpkin pie. We don’t always reflect on the origin – and therefore the true meaning – of the holiday. Doing so is a great way to deepen our gratitude for the opportunity to live in a country blessed by God.
With that in mind, as you’re fixing up your Thanksgiving feast today, or heading to Grandma by car, check out our Family Broadcast Focus ”Remembering the Journey of the Pilgrims. ”
Jay Milbrandt, a professor at Bethel University in Minnesota, joins us in removing the layers of history and bringing us back to what the first Thanksgiving was like. He began researching the Pilgrims after he discovered that his ancestors came to America with the Mayflower. He wrote what he learned in his book, They Came for Freedom: The Forgotten, Epic Story of the Pilgrims.
For example, did you know that North America is actually the Pilgrims second choice? Professor Milbrandt explains why and describes how Pilgrims and Puritans fought to survive in the New World. He also explained the importance of the Mayflower Compact and examined the origins of our modern day Thanksgiving celebration.
Before I end, I want to remind you of our year -end campaign here at Focus on the Family. Generous friends match every donation you make to this ministry. Which means your gift will even double to save a painful marriage, equip parents, and give hope to families.
With your gift of any amount, we will send you a copy of Jay’s book They Came for Freedom: The Forgotten, Epic Story of the Pilgrims. (For more information, visit our website.)
