Robert Plant Says Phil Collins Helped Launch His Solo Career

If you are watching Robert Plant lately, it’s clear he’s fine without it Led the Zeppelin. That doesn’t mean he’s always alone, though: In a new interview with VULTURES, Plant honored his friend Phil Collins for helping him get his solo career off the ground, saying the Genesis musician was “a driving force” for him.

“After John [Bonham, Led Zeppelin drummer] dead and without Led Zeppelin, there’s got to be a way to go,” Plant said in a new interview with VULTURES. “I’m mostly confused because until I was 32, I was on a kind of wild and irrational adventure… Phil Collins in particular was a driving force and had a positive energy on the first record, Photos of Eleven. It’s not hard work to be with other people, it’s just whether we cook it right or not.”

Plant continued: “With Phil, it’s not so much advice as encouragement and consideration. He took no prisoners. He only allowed himself a short time to go to the studio in Wales and do it. No one hides behind the show. “

Collins would continue to perform on drums on five tracks Eleven photos, Plant’s 1982 solo debut. But as Plant admired Collins, the feelings were apparently mutual: “Then he came up to me and basically said, ‘Robert, the guy who’s been sitting behind you all these years is my hero,'” Plant recalled, the man Said Bonham, who died in 1980. “That was it. He said, ‘Anything I can do to help you get back into fighting shape, I’m here…’ He’s a good spirit, a good man.

Perhaps to the chagrin of some die-hard Led Zeppelin fans, Plant is still around no interest to reunite with his iconic hard rock band: In August, he spoke to Los Angeles Times that the reunion feels gimmicky and “just not satisfying [his] should be encouraged.” Collins apparently felt differently, as did his own group Genesis reunion tour in 2021.
