Sega Announces Space Channel 5 and Comix Zone Film Adaptation


Sega isn’t done putting its video game franchises on the silver screen. The company makes films based on the Genesis beat-em-up Comix Zone and the Dreamcast music title Space Channel 5games released in 1995 and 1999, respectively.

The Hollywood Reporter report (which Sega also confirmed in a press release) says that Picturestart is developing the pair of films. Space Channel 5 will be a “comedy/dance adaptation” of the play and is about a fast food worker recruited by a reporter from the future to save the world using “crazy viral dances.” Barry Battles and Nir Paniry are set to write the film.

Comix Zone follows a jaded comic creator and a young, queer writer of color after they become absorbed in the final issue of a comic series. The two must work together to escape and stop a supervillain. The report said it would also be “wise to explore the ever-evolving art of self-narrative.” Mae Catt wrote this film and is best known for DC’s Young Justice and Dragons: The Nine Realms.

Picturestart’s Royce Reeves-Darby, Erik Feig, and Samie Kim Falvey are set to produce the films alongside Sega’s Toru Nakahara. Takumi Yoshinaga and Kagasei Shimomura, also from Sega, will join the teams for the Space Channel 5 and Comix Zone, respectively. Yoshinaga was a writer on the first two Space Channel games and the story and game design advisor for the 2020 VR title. Shimomura did not move Comix Zonebut has been a part of many Sega games such as defeat, Bayonettaand Sonic Origins to name a few.

Sega also previously announced that it developing another Sonic film and a Paths of Wrath movie. It further noted that it is looking to adapt Atlus’ games, which may include person, Catherineand Shin Megami Tensei.
